Does anyone here have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis?

Posted by alicebean @alicebean, Apr 27 8:52pm

I was diagnosed about 4 months ago, after almost two years of going to doctors for multiple symptoms. A simple deeper drive into my thyroid numbers revealed this diagnosis. It took so long to find out and that months of PT, scans, x-rays, MRIs, neurological studies could have been avoided. But I am here now and wondering if anyone has experience managing symptoms and flares?

Btw, the rheumatologist didn’t run the right blood tests to find the Hashimoto’s, so wasn’t helpful…

I have dealt with Hashimoto’s for years, started in my 40’s and I’m now 75. I have a functional medicine doctor and she has prescribed more of a natural med - NP thyroid. I also worked with her nutritionist and I eat 5 Brazilian nuts daily due to this nut’s nutrient of selenium. I use stevia in my coffee and also keep any high sugar products to a minimum. Everyone’s body is different. So you have to find what works for you to keep your thyroid levels of T3, T4, etc in the normal ranges.

I also purchased a book - Hashimoto’s Triggers by Eric Osansky. It’s full of helpful information!

I had Hashimoto's for the past 15 years initially with no symptoms. Until 4 years ago I was diagnosed with systemic sclerosis. The symptoms of fatigue, joint pain and swelling, and some dysautonomia, all started with the onset of SSc.

If someone is having multiple symptoms, more likely they have more than one autoimmune condition. Better check with a good rheumatologist for autoimmune and inflammatory conditions in addition to endocrinologist, who is only looking at thyroid issues.

Because of a need to take other meds (for post herpetic neuralgia…after shingles)whose side effects seem to be diminished by eating, and the directive for taking Levothyroxine being “waiting 30 minutes before eating”…I have been told it would be fine to take this drug (for hypothyroidism) before bedtime. I’m curious if anyone else follows this regimen. Thanks!

@margiem I think that is a great question. I found an article that may be helpful to you:
https://www.healthcentral.com/condition/hypothyroidism/morning-still-best-time-take-levothyroxine
For me, I have to take it in the morning. It works best for me that way. Our cat wakes us up like clockwork at 5:00 am, so I pop the pill, and go back to sleep for a couple of hours after she is fed. I also take omprazole and I have to make sure I take it at least 3 hours from the levothyroxine, or it may block absorbtion. I think the best thing to do is to ask the doctor, but this is what has helped me.

I’m surprised your Endocrinologist didn’t help you with what to do! I suffer from Long Covid, Hashimoto’s and Hypothyroidism. Initially, I didn’t know what was causing me to feel unbalanced, fatigued, inflamed throughout my body, loss of taste and smell, stuttering, anger, headaches, brain fog. These are some symptoms I’ve had throughout this ordeal which began with the Covid Vaccine, I believe. I detected a metal taste in the back of my throat immediately after having my first covid vaccine. I then caught Covid about 8 months later and on day 2 of the virus, I lost my taste and smell and that was in December of 2022 and it’s now May of 2026 and I still don’t have my taste or smell back. I was then diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, along with Hypothyroidism as I was gaining weight by the day and was following a weight loss program. I knew something was wrong! I finally was coaxed by my daughter to have my Thyroid Labs run, which I did. I found out that I not only have Hashimoto’s, but also Hypothyroidism. I never had any of these labs run before I had Covid, never! There is not a medication to control Hashimoto’s, but you can control it by diet. I have eliminated eating gluten, dairy, soy and seed oils as they are highly inflammatory foods. I also take Synthroid 75 mcg to control my Hypothyroidism. Once you loose those hormones that your thyroid produces, you become either hypo or hyperthyroid and you need medication to replace those hormones. If you decide to have your Thyroid Labs checked in addition, ask to have your TSH, T3-free, T4-free, Reverse T-3 and TPO Antibodies run. You’ll know after this test if you have a thyroid condition as well. I wish you luck on your health journey!

@lkirnbauer

Hi, I also have Hashimoto's with hypothyroidism. My current symptoms are: profound fatigue, muscle aches, skin tingling and burning, episodes of dizziness and feeling off-balance, blurry vision that can be getting better and worse, sensitive GI.

Does this sound like your symptoms? Is Synthroid helping you?
