Started Repatha - Side Effects

Posted by HomeAgainLA @llynch17056, Mar 21, 2024

I had terrible side effects with statins (any statin, any dosage). For about 30 years my doctors have pushed statins and
I have resisted. Finally I agreed to Repatha. The first week I had zero side effects. With my second dose, 2 weeks in, i woke up and my joints and muscles hurt a LOT.
1. Does this side effect go away?
2. What do you know about the recent information that the Repatha trials underreporting deaths from cardiac events while taking Repatha.

Actually, saying "thyroid problems" is far too general. There are many types of thyroid conditions with many causes. I haven't read the study yet, but just like with may other diseases, they are far more different than alike. Please don't assume the doc should have known.

Also, did you know that in many practices, docs and their staffs often use flow charts or questionnaires to narrow down diagnoses and figure out how to proceed? These take time to update after new information comes out, gets vetted for accuracy and get included. Not everyone doc can read every bit of information that comes out in addition to seeing patients, managing the documentation and dealing with insurance companies.

Let's start with the citation you provided. It is an AI summary of a single case study not yet published. That is hardly a basis for saying the doctors "should have known" about the issue.

I would say the message here is "stay tuned for further developments"

All of the info we discover is valuable and to be weighed. I think that after DECADES of trying statins and Repatha with disastrous results each time and my doctors basically saying “you HAVE to take it” and acting like I was faking the severity of my side effects, they would read up on every possibility. Mostly, they just didn’t believe me. Statin intolerance is not that rare, yet, most doctors refuse to recognize it, or, at least, how debilitating it can be for some people.

I agree that the response of many doctors to intolerance is a big problem. I just had the conversation with my pian rehab doc this morning - it took 9 years, lots of tries at diet & exercise and several failed drugs and 5 practitioners (including 2 cardiologists) before I found one who didn't press to try "just one more statin". Fortunately, the Repatha the new doc prescribed works for me with minimal side effects that I have learned to manage. He did say he has a few other options if the side effects increase.
Since I had high LDL, coronary artery disease and a history of heart-related deaths in my family, I am trying to make this work. My LDL is down over 70%. If side effects worsen, we will do another scan of the arteries to see if the blockages have resolved and perhaps drop the med.

When you have tried statins too many times to count and then Repatha being terrible, too, you just get tired of harming your body. My side effects were so bad I was bed ridden. If heart disease kills me at least I could get out of bed, live a quality life and die happy rather than the torment of side effects. Chronic horrible pain. Maybe I will die sooner than if I took these drugs and got a low number. But, I will at least live until I die. The last two tries on Repatha took me months to recover. My body just couldn’t take more of that pain and long recovery period.

I am trying one of the new weight loss drugs now that is supposed to help heart disease. No side effects. Maybe this will be an answer.

Good Morning,
Be aware that if you have thyroid problems studies have stated you may be "statin" intolerable. I sure was!!! Best wishes.

I did not know that. I now know the inflammation from the auto-immune can affect heart issues. Thanks for letting me know. I think I have been statin intolerable I have had calf pain for years and taken statins most of that time. Dr. always just checked the pulse in my ankles and said I was okay. Were never really concerned about it. It has been better since I have stopped statins.

Repatha has done wonders lowering my Cholesterol and Trglycetides. Statins cause jount aches etc.

So decided to try Repatha.I have been on it 12months and it seems to be disrupting my digestive system.Severe stomach pain and intermittent diarrhea alternating constipatopn. Is anyone else experiencing these issues?

Repatha made me so sick I could only hold on for two months both times I tried it.

Yes! It was destroying my GI system and my doctor took me off Repatha. Feel free to message me if you want to discuss further. So sorry!

I’m there with you. I can’t tolerate statins or Repatha. That had me back at 260 total cholesterol. I’m trying all I can with diet and exercise and some supplements as well.
