Started Repatha - Side Effects

Posted by HomeAgainLA @llynch17056, Mar 21, 2024

I had terrible side effects with statins (any statin, any dosage). For about 30 years my doctors have pushed statins and
I have resisted. Finally I agreed to Repatha. The first week I had zero side effects. With my second dose, 2 weeks in, i woke up and my joints and muscles hurt a LOT.
1. Does this side effect go away?
2. What do you know about the recent information that the Repatha trials underreporting deaths from cardiac events while taking Repatha.

Would my insurance cover services from Mayo Clinic?

How would that work?

You would need to contact your insurance company and ask them if Mayo Clinic, MN is covered on your plan, @llynch17056.

- I found some information Mayo Clinic has to help you walk through the process, addressing insured and uninsured/underinsured patients: https://www.mayoclinic.org/billing-insurance/insurance
- I see a phone number listed on the Statin Intolerance Services page (link on my previous comment). You could call them directly, 507-738-4002. Let them know you heard about them from Connect.

I have no idea what working with you would look like. I am a Mayo, MN patient so you’d think I would know, right? I have learned every person gets to them in their unique way. I am confident from my experience that they can help you, and in a way that is super efficient and productive. It’s worth asking. Between your Repatha experience, and statin attempts…they can help you.

You could come back here and tell me how it works! What do you think?

I can try. I don’t see how they could replace having a cardiologist here, but maybe they work with your cardiologist. I wish I lived there.

Cardiologist diagnosed me with CHD (coronary heart disease), but when I tried (many times, many different products and doses) statins, then Repatha with debilitating results (unable to move due to joint pain) my cardiologist said, “if you can’t take statins or Repatha then I have nothing for you.” When I told me Internist, he said, “what’s the good of a low cholesterol number if you can get out of bed?” My Internist sees me as a person.
I have had high cholesterol for decades. My father had heart disease and died of a heart attack at age 85.

So sorry your cardiologist reacted that way. That is awful. I am glad your internist reacted more compassionately.

I am sorry your father dealt with heart disease and died of a heart attack. It sounds like he did live a pretty long life. My dad died right before his 89th birthday, but it was not from heart attack, although he did have stents and bypasses earlier.

Good luck with whatever you try next and I hope you find something that works for you!

You make a good point about communication in medicine, jnj. It made me think of Siddhartha Mukargee’s books. He is the master and the great genius on the topic of communication between patient and doctor, and I should perhaps mention Chekov as in the running for the Gold medal. Mukargee writes on cancer, cells, genes, but it’s real life, modern medical cases and how effective medicine is based on the patient’s story. My advice is to read Mukargee for realism and think about Chekov for inspiration.

I am trying to follow my doctors orders with the medication‘s and have been successful doing that and gotten my numbers down really low and as he says superbly! However, the emotional piece is difficult as it was quite a shock. I am researching and reading ahead, everything I can about. Coronary artery disease. I have taken great measures with my assets and put everything in to a trust and a will, and have POA‘s set up for my family. I now have a fiduciary, financial planner, an investment broker, and that stuff is all put in the trust too! I am in the process of clearing out my house. Getting rid of junk. I am always other people other centered And I have always tried to make things easier for everyone else, lol

Hi, Missey - I am also still in shock but trying to work through it all! My CAC score was around 1887 and I was so surprised and dejected. I have gotten a little past that and am praying the Repatha will help. My father, eldest brother, and next eldest brother, and now I think a younger brother who has mental disabilities all have or had heart issues. For some reason, I didn't thnk as a "woman" I would have it. I am like you trying to get things ready, although without the issue of needing financial planners, darn it! 🙂 I finished 36 visits of cardiac rehab last week. at 3 times a week and a friend gave me a nice treadmill which I have used every day but Sunday since I got it. This is huge for me as I was never athletic. I have been type 1 diabetic for 55 years, had Hashimotos thyroiditis since about 1981 which has now destroyed my thyroid, sleep apnea, etc. so no stranger to illness or doctors. I am just doing the best I can and leaving the rest in God's hand. Anyway wanted to wish you good luck with your health! Nita

Good Morning,
Be aware that if you have thyroid problems studies have stated you may be "statin" intolerable. I sure was!!! Best wishes.

Wow! I do have thyroid problems and I am statin intolerant. I have never heard that before. Why haven’t my doctors made that connection?

I have been taking levoxyl for decades and it has maintained my thyroid at a normal level. So, maybe that isn’t the reason for my statin intolerance. But, this is very interesting information and I thank you very much!!
