Started Repatha - Side Effects

Posted by HomeAgainLA @llynch17056, Mar 21, 2024

I had terrible side effects with statins (any statin, any dosage). For about 30 years my doctors have pushed statins and
I have resisted. Finally I agreed to Repatha. The first week I had zero side effects. With my second dose, 2 weeks in, i woke up and my joints and muscles hurt a LOT.
1. Does this side effect go away?
2. What do you know about the recent information that the Repatha trials underreporting deaths from cardiac events while taking Repatha.

Sorry to hear of that. I had to quit statins about ten years ago due to severe joint pain and my cardiologist put me on Repatha. I’ve used it for over two years and have had no adverse effects. It dropped my cholesterol from near 300 to 160 in three months.

@tkoehl2769 I’m happy for you. I don’t think anyone disputes that statins and Repatha reduce cholesterol numbers. I’m glad you didn’t have side effects. Sadly, others have severe side effects. Myself included.

@llynch17056 One shot of Repatha next morning every joint in my body hurt - much worse than muscle pain from two statins! Hospital for 2 wks on morphine for pain, could not stand or walk then wks in rehab detoxing from it! Right leg swollen with edema took 2 months to detox! No 2 nd shot for me!

Was there an explanation for the extreme reaction? For example, were you allergic to something in Repatha?

I am still trying to understand that insidious (for me) drug.

I have had consistent low back pain for months
Orthopedists do not find much other than bulging discs
Now wondering if it is due to repatha which I have taken for many months

@bmcel the worse low back pain of my life was caused by Repatha. It is one of the main side effects. It has taken about 6 months to completely go away after quitting Repatha.

@bmcel
I have been on Repatha for 2.5 years and my brother for about 8 years. We have experienced no side effects at all. In fact, I was able to get rid of the other statins and so was he. I have 3 stents in my LAD artery and I would rather not take chances. And, BTW, had low back pain for the first time in my life, for a couple of months about 6 month ago. I am 81. I Go to a gym a couple of days a week and my trainer cured that in a few sessions.

@bobtrev I am so happy for you. I wish I didn’t have debilitating side effects from statins and Repatha. It would make my life so simple. It wouldn’t have been FDA approved if everyone had the side effects I have. Some do and some don’t. You are very lucky to not have side effects. Some people have side effects so bad that they become disabled by the use. I am one of those.

@llynch17056 I’m sorry you experienced that. Does it feel muscular, or is it your kidneys? Trying to understand what Repatha does to our bodies that causes the pain to manifest? Glad you’re better.

@csullivan21 both statins and Repatha caused me extreme muscular pain and general malaise sufficient to make me bedbound, but Repatha caused back pain so bad that every step caused pain. It didn’t feel like kidney pain, it felt like I had broken bones in my low lumbar spine.

I had to stop statins because of a combination of brain fog and extreme itching,
My first dose went OK, and it made me happy that it improved my ability to poop. I have Gastroparesis, so that is a problem. However, I also have neuropathy in my bladder. One of the side effects of Repatha is difficulty voiding. I had taught myself different positions and relaxation to void. Since taking Repatha for 2 1/2 months, I am getting increased difficulty in voiding.
Also, I have been losing weight because with my stomach issues, I have not been able to eat much. I was doing better before Repatha. Under the circumstances, I cannot be certain that Repatha is the cause of the stomach issues, but I am discontinuing it.

@htaish I wanted to take statins. I wanted to take Repatha. I couldn’t continue either. I’m on Terzepitide now. I’ll see if it helps my numbers. I’m tolerating it well, but I have to be very careful what I eat or I get constipated and that has not been my issue until now. It’s ok because I am eating not to have constipation, but it has been very conscious eating.
