I'm traveling to Rochester, MN from Kansas City, MO

Posted by @hlthyskr, Jun 26, 2015

I’m traveling to Rochester, MN from Kansas City, MO for the first time in July. My actual appointment date is July 28th. I’m looking to find out how to get the cheapest flight through Delta and the closest hotel to the Mayo Clinic and least expensive hotel for two people. Can anyone help me get this information? Thank you very much for your help!

You may want to check flight options both to MSP and to RST. Sometimes it’s cheaper to fly all the way to RST (with a layover in MSP), or otherwise you can pick up a shuttle at the airport (gorochesterdirect.com) for your MSP to Rochester leg. The shuttle will drop you off at any of the hotels. As for hotels, I would suggest looking on Priceline or Hotels.com and look for proximity to Mayo Clinic. Otherwise, you should know that almost all of the hotels in Rochester have a shuttle to Mayo Clinic, even if they aren’t in easy walking distance. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your help! I’ve booked my flight and reserved my hotel this week already with the Mayo Clinic Travel Agent. If there happens to be a next time I will probably make my flight reservation directly with Delta, because I’ve found that their prices are cheaper. After going through several websites I was having trouble deciding on a good hotel and I do believe that I got a good price quote for a good hotel with the travel agent. Thanks for your help and information!

can you tell me if they do any required testing such as CT, MRI, so on on the first visit. I cannot figure out how long to stay.

Welcome to Connect, @elizabethcharis.
Sometimes testing is done on the first visit. May I ask what your visit is concerning? Then I can connect you with others who have been to Mayo Clinic for a similar condition and they will share their experiences with you.

Thank u so much for the reply. I just started freaking out today about the
traveling and wondering how much time I should be there, so I’m thrilled to
be “connected.” The panic is due to fear of having to make 2 trips for the
testing.

I’m driving and have a hotel as long as needed as i was told by the
registration dept that they do testing at the time of the appointment.

Driving will cause me such agony in my neck, jaw and head. But I just
discovered from a CT scan the extent of damage to my sinuses and shattered
septum from the first of 3 jaw surgeries. I sent in records and requested
to be seen by an ENT upon discovering that damage. I do not feel good about
the pain of flying with that intense pressure and dizziness in my head.

The jaw is what my Mayo appointment is for (oral maxillofacial dept). The
bones never healed after any of the surgeries and the hardwire broke down
each time (non union). It is held together with titanium plates which have
now broken.

Sorry long winded, I’m stressed today. Lol. Thank u again so very much.

Elizabeth, I can understand being stressed about your first visit to Mayo Clinic. Were you given a number to call from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department? They should be able to give you specific answers about the timing of tests on your first visit.

It helps to here from others who have been there. So, I’m tagging some of the members from the Visiting Mayo Clinic group who have been to Mayo Clinic for a variety of conditions, although not to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

@rosemarya, @cynaburst, @audrapopp, @allegro, @HeartPatches, Elizabeth specifically asks about getting tests done during the first visit to Mayo and you have all spoken before about the efficiency of testing. She would like to avoid having to make the long drive several times. Any insights?

I can help answer about my first visit to Mayo in Jacksonville back last December I was told to spend about week. Now I was going there for a colonoscopy/EMR, plus a bunch of other testing. But I was told to expect to stay at least a week and be prepared to stay longer if need be.
I wish you the Best.. Mayo Clinic Hospitals are one the best Hospitals with Out of this World Doctors, TOP NOTCH. 🙂

Mayo clinic is extremely efficient with their scheduling My results were already with my doctor when I had my appointment later in the day. Sometimes, when additional tests/procedures were necessary, my schedule was adjusted to accommodate those. I know that it is stressful to be facing uncertainty, but I think I can honestly say that you will not wait very long to receive the information about your diagnosis and treatment possibilities. Take a list of your questions with you. Hope this helps.
Try to smile. Think positive. Have a safe trip. Rosemary

I had open heart surgery at Mayo several years ago. I was travelling from California and had a small child, so I also did not want to travel there twice. I was able to communicate with the doctors and schedulers in advance of my visit so that I was able to schedule both testing and surgery in one visit.

I first sent the cardiologist my testing reports from my home so we knew what my tentative plans were as long as Mayo’s testing corroborated those findings. Then, I scheduled the testing for the first two days of my visit and the surgery for the third day. It worked out perfectly and in total, I was in Rochester for just about 2 weeks. If they had decided that surgery was not indicated, they would have just cancelled my surgery appointment. The schedulers are quite used to this kind of thing and will accomodate if they are able. Sometimes you may have to wait for scheduling (I waited for a few months in order to assure that both my cardiologist and surgeon would be there and available) but it worked out great. Wishing you the best.

Wow, thanks, that IS EXACTLY my plan. Just so unsure about it. But I’m
finding the same idea on most of the comments. Thanks again

I live in Topeka, not far from KC. I would say that it is important to remind them whenever scheduling is happening that you are 6 hours away. They are so fantastic and sometimes just need to realize your unique situation and priority. It sounds like your initial appointment is set already. For the future I would recommend asking for a Monday appointment if possible so you minimize the need to stay over a weekend.

Oh WOW this is the most helpful information! Thank u so much.
That’sy.problrm not knowi.g how to plan the stay n all.
I assumed they have to tell u that info AFTER consultation. So, now that I
realize my septum was also destroyed during my first jaw surgery thus the
agony and dizziness and a number of symptoms I thought were all due to my
jaw surgeries….. I am trying to get in with an ENT as well and my Dr at
Mayo has received all those recorded CT , so on and I asked him to
recommend me for the ENT Dept as well. WHICH right now means another
seperate trip n I am.alone in this w a daughter who will fly out for the
actual.surgery.
So……how …. who do I speak to a about the extent of scheduling you
spoke of?
No one explained it to me that I could do so much prep b4 Hand…. just
come in n see …. like any reg doctor does.
I’m guess im asking for the dept to speak to for this. Oral Maxillofacial
dept is for the jaw and ENT us for the nose. Tho I can only imagine
still… them saying …. no we have to access it first. Lol I had no idea

Colleen, thank you so very much this has been full of information for me to
better understand. I just received information from a “Cynaburst”
explaining that i can indeed find out about when any testing can talke
place and she was even able to have that scheduled and her actual surgery
scheduled. Then they would cancel it if they decided on another route. WOW
Coming in by myself with my daughter planning on flying out when the actual
surgery takes place this was a revelation for me. Also i asked my Oral
Maxillofacial doctor to recomend me to see and ENT, (not sure if i already
told you sorry if so) for the damage to the septum as i only now discovered
in my CT. All the records have been received by Dr Fillmore and I am
wondering how in the world I would go about getting these kinds of details
confirmed b4 going? Possibly scheduling with both doctors, finding out a
testing schedule and if both surgeries can be done at the same fisit or if
I have to wait till one is healed (of course the jaw is the worse one) b4
getting the nasal repares.
So what departments do i contact about finding out exact scheduling of
tests and even surgery? Her comment was the schedulers are used to dong
this expecially if you are traveling.
Again Thank you
Liz
