Anyone travel to Mayo Clinic for complex back/hip pain?
Hello everyone,
I am looking to connect with anyone who has traveled to Mayo Clinic with complex, overlapping chronic back and hip pain.
I live in Canada and have already gone through multiple treatments and imaging scans locally, but my case remains an undiagnosed puzzle. I am looking for a deep diagnostic dive to find the root cause and map out a non-surgical, functional rehabilitation plan.
If you have been in a similar situation, I would love to hear about your experience:
Which campus did you choose? (I am strongly leaning toward Rochester, MN due to their diagnostic reputation).
How successful were they at untangling your hip vs. spine pain? Did they catch anything your local doctors missed on your previous scans?

4 ReactionsWhat is the nature of your hip and/or spine pain? Do you believe that they are related or that they are 2 separate independent issues? What do your previous providers guess is/are your issue/s? I wish you good luck.
@bajjerfan it’s not clear if they are related or two separate but on the same side problems. I suspect they are related.

What is the nature of your hip pain? Is it a burning sensation like you might have with bursitis or something different? Apparently you don't need a hip replacement which should be an obvious diagnosis by even a mediocre orthopedist. For me I have sharp burning pain near my right trochanter/hip joint. Sounds a lot like bursitis. On the same side at the top of the pelvic bone there is a small area of similar burning pain that feels like something is torn and being stretched. I believe that these 2 are related. Adding insult to injury I often feel a a narrow band of pain across the whole of my lower back above the pelvic bone area. I don't think it has squat to do with the hip pain. Unfortunately nobody seems to have a clue what the cause/s is/are.
Sounds frustrating. You are correct, it is not bursitis or anything to do with the hip socket. It’s an ache/pain in the same areas you described and I’ve had no success with a diagnosis. Have you tried the Mayo clinic for your issues? I’m considering it as a next step as I’m out of options in Canada.

Yes, I did see an ARNP in their spine dept, but they offered nothing of therapeutic value to me.
