Check in--cheerleaders wanted

Posted by janism @janism, 6 days ago

I am trying to force myself to exercise because I need it for my osteoporosis and I am finding myself getting perceptibly weaker as I age. I'm not at all sedentary; I probably walk 2-3 miles per day just getting around and do lots of household stuff as guardian of a 6 year old and 16 year old, and I'm an elementary school teacher during the year on my feet all day. While that was fine when I was younger, my body is telling me that I need to be more systematic now. I want to keep being able to do the things I love, and exercise is clearly one of the ways to do that, but I hate it.

I want to start this thread as a place to check in with the things we find hard--exercise, nutrition, human relations, whatever--and a place to cheer each other on.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Osteoporosis & Bone Health Support Group.

I'll start:

I am aiming to do 20 minutes a day of exercise, alternate days: 20 minutes on my little tiny treadmill and 20 minutes of weights.

I've done one day on the treadmill at 4.5 mph and one day with my 8 lb weights. Drinking my morning coffee now and gearing up for the treadmill.

@janism

Bravo to you on day one.
You are doing great. Thanks for starting this thread.
I am 78 and looking for support to make sure I do my 2000 on my Cubii2 and move to more reps and positions for my arms with 5 pound weights.

What a good thread! I will jump in. Full disclosure: I am dreading this necessary change in my life. Just started PT with a Nationally Certified Bone Fit instructor. Today’s my second session. I am hoping to learn what is necessary for me moving forward, but I can’t shake the feeling of dread. I have always been active but not in the right ways to stave off this bone deterioration. I am not good at maintaining momentum to exercise at home. I know—I need to change my mindset! I am also meeting with a nutritionist this week to see what they have to say as well. Here’s to us all being motivated!

While I don’t count reps or use a health club, I do start each day very early with a set of exercises I’ve learned over the years…and do small spurts of them over the day…I do have to be careful of my back, so that means devising these exercises with the help of my DO.MD and my PT. Adding ‘’conscious breathing ‘’ is a big help in reducing tension. It can be done any time if the day—just follow your breath with focused awareness at times during the day that are a bit quieter—no special skills or equipment required…i do it on peaceful walks.

@janism This is a great topic!

I’ve been active for most of my life with all kinds of different activities. I did these activities like cross-country skiing, hiking, swimming laps, long walks because I enjoyed them. Now that I’m in my 70’s I find myself slowing down.

These days I work with a personal trainer two times a week with strength training. I don’t lift as heavy as I used to however a combination of osteoporosis medications (Evenity and Reclast) and weightlifting resulted in large gains in bone density. That’s satisfying.

Here is what I struggle with. I need more aerobic exercise for cardiovascular health and for osteoporosis. Currently I have an injury/tenderness at the top end of my left hamstring muscles and sit bone. I have exercises that the PT sent home with me. I need to remind and will myself every day to do these exercises. I also need to “watch” my nutrition for cardiovascular health and osteoporosis. Why take medication if I don’t make these lifestyle changes?

Thank you for the cheerleading messages. Let’s all cheer one another on!!

@shocknot26 I'm working on the exact same issues. I find that having my little foldable walkpad "treadmill" at home helps because I can read and fast walk at the same time. I tell myself that I'm not exercising--I'm giving myself time to read. The weight stuff and squats and such are another story. What can we tell ourselves to keep it positive instead of just "It will stop things from getting worse"?

I started up with yoga, again. Is that beneficial for (diagnosed) significant osteoporosis? I know, I also should do weights, however at this time I have rotator cuff issues.

You are right and we love it. Got it 6 years ago to strengthen my legs prior to knee replacement. We are even considering getting a new model with higher levels of resistance.
