Down in the dumps again – challenges with adult children

Posted by kdo0827 @kdo0827, Dec 27, 2018

Hi everyone! It’s been awhile since I’ve posted. I started taking Cymbalta and got off the other stuff. I was doing better but the past 2 months or so not so good. I’m struggling with feeling invisible and I’m feeling very unappreciated. I feel my kids only call when they want something or have a problem. They never ask how I’m feeling nor do they try and help. I had a procedure done yesterday and neither one bothered to check on me. Adding this to my depression isn’t good. Do any of you have these same feelings about your kids? What should I do?

Hello @kdo0827
I would like to add my good thoughts to Lisa's (@lisalucier) about your upcoming colonoscopy. I hope that you have good results. As a side note to Cymbalta, I've been taking a small dose (just 20 mg per day) for over a year now (for both pain and sleep problems) without any constipation side effects. That is pretty remarkable because constipation is common for me because of repeated surgeries of the upper digestive tract as well as Parkinson's which has the common side effect of constipation. The only drug that I ever took (and only for one month) that significantly affected constipation was Gabapentin. I only took 300 mg at bedtime for a month and then it took me over 8 weeks to get back to normal. However, the low dose of Cymbalta has not been a problem.

Have you ever tried a Magnesium supplement for constipation? While I'm not trying to sell anything, I've had good success with "Calm" a magnesium powder that you mix (first in warm water until it fizzes) and then add cold water or juice. If I take it at bedtime the constipation is solved. Also, Smooth Move Tea, is also very effective. Both Calm and Smooth Move Tea can be purchased at any health food store. Of course, always check with your doctor before trying anything new.

Wishing you well today and tomorrow. Will you post again?

@kdo0827- Thinking of you! Best of luck!!! PS_ Hospitals hand out col-rite for constipation all the time. I use it if my diet is off. It's great.

Thank you. I’ll try to post tomorrow. One of my colon issues is due to taking Methadone. It affects the nerves in the colon so that the colon doesn’t get all the signals to empty. Once again we take a medication for one thing but it causes something else 😑

@kdo0827 I understand. The Gabapentin was for the purpose of tingling and nerve pain in my legs at night, but when it made the nerves in my legs quiet, it also made the nerves in my colon quiet. What a dilemma! Look forward to hearing from you again after your recovery.

Thanks for checking on me. Things are pretty much the same with my daughters but I did explain to one how I felt about them not calling to see how my procedure went. There’s a possibility I may have colon or stomach cancer. I’m having a colonoscopy on Wednesday. I’m praying it’s nothing serious going on. I’m not one to call attention to myself so I haven’t shared this. My depression is out of control. I’m very fatigued, absolutely no desire to leave the house, I feel very empty inside. I’m taking Cymbalta but I’m wondering if it’s the problem. Hope you’re doing well, love the hug your pillow idea!!

I had to stop Cymbalta abd Effexor as doctor told me they are related.

Battling those "down in the dumps" moments as many can do. I come to connect for some social life and learn what has helped others. Still learning ways to cope. Still finding distraction is my strongest skill. I see a therapist again next Monday. I get irritated easily and not sure as to why. Not wanting to be around others-except my grandson. His 4 year old play world becomes our special place. I want him to have happy memories of me. I am the only family my son has that he sees. Sad what his 2 older siblings are missing. Their choice as they are both only 10 minutes away. They only show up when there is something in it for them-there is and they just can't see it through their materialistic eyes.

@parus This cyber-table is such an important gathering place. Two days ago a good friend met with me for lunch, and related her family troubles to me. My husband is going through family issues. As am I. It seems so epidemic right now, and I cannot help but wonder where the common thread is, for all this unrest. Like you, distraction is helping, but not all days. Some days I escape into a morning of extra sleep, my body is so weary from mental exercise and emotional upset. Here we can lean on each other and find support.
