Depression and Anxiety at an older age

Posted by pjss48 @pjss48, Sep 14, 2018

I am a 70 year old woman who has had depression and anxiety for a long time. It got worse 3 years ago when my husband lost one of his jobs. I panicked and my anxiety increased. I was afraid to do things. like driving. I have arthritis pretty bad and foot problems. I'm a Christian and my faith has helped me. My husband was a pastor and our church closed 3 months ago. We've had continual stress. Sometimes I don't know what to do with myself during the day. I've gotten help from several doctors, including a psychiatrist. I also have IBS. I am better. I'm taking trazadone duloxetine, remeron and xanax. Also on osteo biflex, probiotic , bentyl and celebrex. I want to get on Sam e but it may interact with one of my meds. Thanks for listening.

@sapphira- Welcome to Mayo Connect. I think that I stated something confusing. I did not say that my husband, not me, couldn't get an MRI because his insurance wouldn't pay for it. His insurance wont pay for it until he does a certain amount of PT.
I hate MRI's myself. I almost stopped the machine the last time, at the very beginning, but the technician said I would just have to come back. That straightened me out! He put a small scarf over my head so I could only see straight ahead, not up so I couldn't see what was confining me!

@merpreb Just saw on T.V the FDA will soon approve a Ketamine nasal spray wanted to pass on if you didn't know this for depression

@lioness- Hi Linda. Thank you for passing on this information. However you should know that this is a very dangerous drug. One of the street names is K. It's used as a date rape drug. Maybe they want to make it more difficult for street use. I mean there's no way you can sneak up on anyone and spray something up their nose without them knowing it! It's also an anesthesia.

@merpreb I didn't know that never heard of it before maybe its a different dosage for depression???/

@lioness- It might be but it's habit forming and an anesthesia. I wouldn't take it. Would you?

@lioness. It would be 3-5 years before it would be approved by the FDA according to webmd. It's known on the streets as Special K. Read the whole article to see the hopes as well as the dangers. It is being tested for pulling people out of severe depression. Hope that's helpful.

@merpreb The ketamine the FDA is looking at is esketamine, a cousin to the anesthesia and party drug. I’ll ask my neighbor who’s daughter was getting a ketamine infusion for severe depression. It sure doesn’t sound like a toy but if it works, it’s worth a try!

The new version of ketamine hit the local news this morning thus announcing it to the public. How long before folks are lying about symptoms in hope of obtaining a new high?? Yes, I am the skeptical, analytical one. Seems there have been many things that have been meant to help that have turned into something sought out by those in search of a high or selling it on the streets. Scientists have also made a chemical from sugar that mimicks THC.
Not being critical as it is good to be informed. My concern is a new drug hitting the streets thus making it illegal. I think my attitude is due to living in closer proximity with street drugs.
