Depression and Anxiety at an older age

Posted by pjss48 @pjss48, Sep 14, 2018

I am a 70 year old woman who has had depression and anxiety for a long time. It got worse 3 years ago when my husband lost one of his jobs. I panicked and my anxiety increased. I was afraid to do things. like driving. I have arthritis pretty bad and foot problems. I'm a Christian and my faith has helped me. My husband was a pastor and our church closed 3 months ago. We've had continual stress. Sometimes I don't know what to do with myself during the day. I've gotten help from several doctors, including a psychiatrist. I also have IBS. I am better. I'm taking trazadone duloxetine, remeron and xanax. Also on osteo biflex, probiotic , bentyl and celebrex. I want to get on Sam e but it may interact with one of my meds. Thanks for listening.

@merpreb The ketamine the FDA is looking at is esketamine, a cousin to the anesthesia and party drug. I’ll ask my neighbor who’s daughter was getting a ketamine infusion for severe depression. It sure doesn’t sound like a toy but if it works, it’s worth a try!

FDA did approve it and it's for someone when other treatments don't work.

The new version of ketamine hit the local news this morning thus announcing it to the public. How long before folks are lying about symptoms in hope of obtaining a new high?? Yes, I am the skeptical, analytical one. Seems there have been many things that have been meant to help that have turned into something sought out by those in search of a high or selling it on the streets. Scientists have also made a chemical from sugar that mimicks THC.
Not being critical as it is good to be informed. My concern is a new drug hitting the streets thus making it illegal. I think my attitude is due to living in closer proximity with street drugs.

@parus- This was my first reaction too. When doctors start thinking outside the box to help more people who haven't been helped with traditional meds they do open up a can of worms.

@merpreb Hello again. If there is something out there that can help I am all for it!! Hoping they come up with something for pain and depression that doesn’t leave me feeling like a criminal for mentioning either issues. This ping pong ball this is destructive on an array of levels. End up feeling like they see me as lazy and weak. My issue. Ought not to matter. I present with the optimistic attitude only to get slapped down again. Regrouping thus far has not given any hope. Maybe I need to be more pathetic. Not my style.

@parus- Who is they?

@merpreb The medical folks. No one seems to want to hear the “P” word. I can deal with the depression. Not dealing well with both. I feel like they don’t believe me. I tell them a good day is a “5” on their pain scale and these are infrequent. I guess I am asking too much to try to find alternatives. It it the depression that keep me from getting help! I see a therapist occasionally just to keep the medical people satisfied as they always ask. Sorry I am doing too much circle talk.

@parus- awww, I hear you. Listen, it is a circle for you. How could you think in any other fashion. Tell me please, what do you mean it's depression that prevents you from getting help? What help? For pain?

@merpreb They always mention this. There always asking is depressing! In a funk right now. I will figure things out. Also in a lot more pain from last PT as her forcing down on my shoulders with her body weight and pushing my head to the side with her hand has my back in spasms. Not her fault she is just doing her what she has been trained. I am there for help and will not allow her to do that again! Maybe she does not understand spine issues. I am there for cervical. I will NOT be put through that again! Worse than a choke hold.

@parus, please don't be frustrated. Are they asking you to get more help with depression?

@merpreb I heard that this morning too. It can only be administered in a doctor's office or hospital is what I heard. It is a lesser dosage of what they are using on the streets. They also stresssed if you are on an antidepressant that works, don't look to this.

@pearlbaby7- Good information! It's a shot and a person will need be monitored for 2 hours after it in the dr's office. I believe that it's a shot!
