Depression and Anxiety at an older age

Posted by pjss48 @pjss48, Sep 14, 2018

I am a 70 year old woman who has had depression and anxiety for a long time. It got worse 3 years ago when my husband lost one of his jobs. I panicked and my anxiety increased. I was afraid to do things. like driving. I have arthritis pretty bad and foot problems. I'm a Christian and my faith has helped me. My husband was a pastor and our church closed 3 months ago. We've had continual stress. Sometimes I don't know what to do with myself during the day. I've gotten help from several doctors, including a psychiatrist. I also have IBS. I am better. I'm taking trazadone duloxetine, remeron and xanax. Also on osteo biflex, probiotic , bentyl and celebrex. I want to get on Sam e but it may interact with one of my meds. Thanks for listening.

@pearlbaby7- Good information! It's a shot and a person will need be monitored for 2 hours after it in the dr's office. I believe that it's a shot!

I would be willing to give this a try. Wonder how long this nasal spray will last? Any info available?

@parus, please don't be frustrated. Are they asking you to get more help with depression?

@merpreb Maybe the specialists are wanting to make sure all the bases are covered.
Okay, will stop feeling frustrated. Bury myself in a drawing and chant, “I am not frustrated”. Yes, I am being a wise acre. An attempt at comic relief. 😁

@merpreb They always mention this. There always asking is depressing! In a funk right now. I will figure things out. Also in a lot more pain from last PT as her forcing down on my shoulders with her body weight and pushing my head to the side with her hand has my back in spasms. Not her fault she is just doing her what she has been trained. I am there for help and will not allow her to do that again! Maybe she does not understand spine issues. I am there for cervical. I will NOT be put through that again! Worse than a choke hold.

@parus I understand what you are saying. I had PT for cervical problems and one time the PT pulled up on my neck, It felt good at the time, but I was dizzy and sick all the next day. The next time I was there I told her to not do that again and there were no more problems like that.
Everyone reacts differently to those treatments so keep advocating for yourself!

@parus- awww, I hear you. Listen, it is a circle for you. How could you think in any other fashion. Tell me please, what do you mean it's depression that prevents you from getting help? What help? For pain?

Jump to this post

@merpreb Yes, it is the circle of trying to find some pain relief that had me anxious and frustrated. Maybe there are no answers. Who knows? I do not have a history of pain or fatigue with depression. Nothing can be done seems to be the verdict. How about discouraged for now? Seeing so many different medical professionals has been a dead end thus far... I know it seems worse than it is.

@hopeful33250 Thank you. I have been feeling awful since the last PT. Saw a different one than tried another approach. Not for me.

@parus- I agree with you @parus. Seeing a lot of doctors who do nothing to encourage you or give you answers is very discouraging. If you are feeling worse than this sounds than it is! I'm so stumped as how to help you right now. With the leads still attached to your vagus nerve is there another kind of stimulation that is available?

@merpreb I heard it's administered either as a nasal spray in the doctor's office or an IV in the hospital. But again, they stressed that it's only for people that get no relief from any other antidepressant and/or so far down/suicidal that they need an immediate response to meds as opposed to the normal 6 to 8 weeks.

@parus I'm assuming you've been to a pain clinic at some point and that was not helpful either? I went through probably a dozen psychiatrists before I finally found the one who could get me out of that hole. I'm not "healed" but I'm not in that really bad place anymore. I know the frustration and thoughts of giving up trying but, if not the next one, maybe the one after that can ease your pain enough for you to focus on other things in your life like your beautiful artwork. Hang in there girl! We'll help you tie the knots in the rope you're holding onto.
