Has anyone had breast cancer with negative mamograms and no lesions?

Posted by sassega @sassega, Dec 7, 2025

In January 2024, I had a hip X-ray due to a fall. The ER doctor said I had a lesion on my hip bone. Eventually, a biopsy was done, and I was diagnosed with ER+PR+HER2- breast cancer. My lesions were too numerous to count, but none were in the breast. I am currently on Ibrance and Letrozole and am "stable". It just seems strange to have breast cancer, but it's not in my breasts. Has this happened to anyone else?

I had a cough that developed in the spring of '22. It wasn't unusual due to allergies so I went to my doctor and a chest X-ray showed a very small nodule on the right side and thought it was pneumonia. A month later and short of breath I went to the ER which I'm lead to the diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer in my right lung, pleura, lymph nodes, sternum and ribs. I was a mess. I had pleural fluid and a drain. My first treatment took all of it away within 3 months. I'm on my second line now, and still doing great.

@stephlb, so glad to hear that treatment resolved many of the uncomfortable symptoms within 3 months. What second line treatment protocol are you on now? Manageable side effects?

I am HR + Her2 low with none of the usual BC mutations. My first line was Verzenio +Exemestane. It was successful for 37 months. Now I am on Fulvestrant and first scan showed all soft tissue mets clear along with most of my bone mets. I feel wonderful on Fulvestrant and I'm hoping for a long run on this one. My energy level is mostly restored to normal, no nausea. I have achy legs some nights and the injection sites are sore for a few days. I find that extra activity just after getting the shots helps shorten the length of discomfort.

Hello, I have severe osteoporosis (T score 3.5) and was about to start Teriparatide when by chance I discovered that I had breast cancer. My mother has had breast cancer so I was always careful as I also had dense breasts. Mammograms are not totally reliable in my case and I always had ultrasound follow up. This time I just got a breast MRI done on my own and a tiny lesion was discovered which turned out to be malignant ( doc still had a mammo done which was clear!) I've just had lumpectomy and will now next go for radiation. Any advice on how to protect my already weak bones and when to start bone medication?
Thanks

@beyourownadvocate Thank you and I wish I knew that sooner. Yes, I had cancer in my right breast but it was only seen in my left and the docs did not want to do a double mastectomy. I pushed and had the double and they came back to me a week later to say they found cancer in my previously stated “cancer free” breast.

I opted for a double mastectomy also.
My sress levels and side effects from meds are GONE.

@lansing
So glad to hear you are doing well and stress and side effects are gone. It seems like you have been through a lot of initial stress and side effects .

Where did you have your double mastectomy and who was your plastic surgeon? This would be very helpful feedback.

Thank you and best wishes for the holidays.

@stephlb I was on Fulvestrant for 4 months, but was having severely achy legs late in the day & couldn't stand long to cook dinner. I wanted to reduce the drug to one shot, not two, but they said nope! it's not approved by the FDA. I think it was too strong for me, at 130 lbs. Then I broke out in a seeming rash all over both legs below the knees, but it was really Petachiae, a problem with broken capillaries in the skin. I quit taking it then, but 2 months later my ankles and feet started swelling. I've had to wear compression socks every day. I just had an ultrasound of my legs and one they say shows Vein Insufficiency in two spots. Am going tomorrow to talk to a Vascular Doc about what I need to do.
I am not happy that in treating breast cancer I have ended up with two other problems that really impact the quality of my life! So just keep an eye on your legs, and I hope it doesn't get worse like mine did. We should be able to reduce dosage if we want.

Yes, I was diagnosed breast cancer from a biopsy of a lesion in my hip
bone. So I never, as of 2 years... Had breast involvement.

@shail Tamoxifen helps protect bones. I'm taking a half-dose (10 mg) & doing ok.

@shail —I would recommend Raloxifene instead of tamoxifen as it helps your bones and protects against breast cancer with fewer side effects. It mimics estrogen's effects in the bones to prevent bone thinning and strengthening them (especially the spine) and at the same time blocks the effects of estrogen on breast tissue, reducing the risk of developing invasive breast cancer.
