Dehydration: How long does it take to hydrate again?
I have been quite busy the last couple of months, and apparently have not been drinking enough water. One afternoon I took a nap when I woke up, I was dizzy, headache, and nauseated. Did some research online and decided it was dehydration. What a terrible feeling. Started drinking more water and electrolyte next day. The dizziness went away, but still had nausea. Does anyone know how long this takes to hydrate again?

Speaking about dehydration, does anyone have any clever ideas to get a senior at 91 years of age to drink more water or any other liquids? My dad is diabetic, has a catheter for almost 2 years now, isn’t on a lot of pills, and just refuses to drink more. He just says “bull_ _ _ _”. Yup! I make brothy soups, certain fruits that he can have, also sugar free slurpies, sugar - free everything. It’s just very difficult to get him to drink more. I thought I heard of gummies that hydrated you and were sugar free - has anyone heard of them or know anyone that used them?? Thank you!

You might look at some of the suggestions in this discussion thread from one of the cancer groups:

The one suggestions that I use is adding electrolytes. I use a is product called Liquid IV that is added to water. It was suggested by my endocrinologist. It is similar to Pedialyte. There are other products that similar.

1 ReactionThank you so much for your information and link. I will definitely look into it. Appreciate it so much. Take care
On my 70th birthday I got up out of my office chair and I lost my balance. Day 2 I had nausea when I woke up but symptoms weren't extreme. I thought I could shake it. Day 3, I woke up and the room was a spinning and I was nauseous. I went to the the emergency room and found out I was dehydrated. Was given an IV and felt better. They gave me some Ativert for the dizziness. Its been a few days. Ive been drinking low sugar Powerade and water mix. Im slowly getting back to normal.I live in South Carolina and I usually cut my grass early in the morning. I had cut the grass 2 days before. I have CKD plus high blood pressure and take meds for the HBP. Saw my PCP and she said I had a storm of bad stuff. I use Miralax because I was on opiates for years and and I like to keep things moving. The combination of sweating during the grass cutting, Miralax use and taking diuretics for HBP caught up with me. It's scary when the room was spinning and you have no balance. Thank God for furniture and my wife who saw something just wasn't right with me. I know now what Im dealing with. Hang in there folks and stay hydrated.

1 ReactionWelcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, @stephendsessomssr. That must have been frightening to wake up with the room spinning and find you couldn’t keep your balance. I’m glad your wife recognized something wasn’t right and that you went to the emergency room.
It sounds like your PCP helped you put several pieces together—working outside and sweating, the MiraLAX, and the diuretic you take for your blood pressure. With CKD in the mix too, I imagine figuring out the right balance with fluids is especially important.
You mentioned you’re slowly getting back to normal. What symptoms are you still noticing now? Did your PCP give you any guidance about how much or what you should be drinking going forward?

2 Reactions@jlharsh Yes she told me to drink halfed Gatorade zero and water, rest a couple of days. She said I would only need the Ativert a day or 2 more. I only took it one more day and only one dose. All I feel now is like I'm getting my strength ba c k. Very little effects left. She told me to hydrate good before and while Im outside to do any work. I used to do lawns for a living. Just got to remember I'm 70 with my medical issues instead of 30. I got to be more careful.

1 Reaction@mikaylar I have not heard of the electrolyte, ELMT powder. What is it and how should it help? What was your experience like?
I had a spinal procedure and doc said to take this because I was dehydrated. Walmart has this. It has 1,000 mg of sodium though so be careful.Right now I am using 1/2 the dosage. I am constantly running to the bathroom.
@mikaylar As kidney patients, we are always on the look out and reading labels! 1000mg of sodium is 43% of the normal diet. Waaay too much for a kidney diet!
@stephendsessomssr Perhaps using children's Pedialyte may help with dehydration? Check the label for the potassium! As CKD patients, tweaking and balancing our hydration/diet needs is such a challenge!
