Treating vertigo?

Posted by lwbarker @lwbarker, Mar 7 6:46am

I just had my first bout with vertigo, after merely rolling over in bed quickly. Pcp sent me to neurologist who taught me the Epley Maneuver. It helped, but still somewhat dizzy. Anything else?

Hello @lwbarker, so sorry to hear of your vertigo. It is frustrating and really disrupts your life. I have repeated the Epley manouver over and over until the vertigo is gone. If you think about the displaced crystals in the inner ear causing this, it makes sense that perhaps there are still some crystals out of place. I have used Meclizine (Bonine for motion sickness), an over the counter medication. It can make you sleepy though. I also have a prescription medication Compazine that works well for me. My experience has been that this condition can pop up whenever and sometimes it resolves quickly and other times it takes time and repeated maneuvers. Have you tried repeating the Epley?

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and advice. Yes I have repeated it a few times and am mostly over the dizziness, but will do it again if it starts up again. I had not heard from friends to repeat several times after the initial whiz-bang, but the crystal dislodgement and possible leftovers makes sense. It was all new to me, so personal experience is helpful.

I got vertigo from a car accident. Meclizine works for me. Always have some with you. J had several trips to ent team at Mayo that specializes in vertigo. Took a couple visits to learn the epley movements. If not done properly it won't help. I learned to twist and bend over or even lean very slowly to let the crystals move with you. Good luck. I still have to be careful turning over in bed. Getting up from bed or chair is also slow. Let the crystals relocate slowly?

I’ve had an acute onset of vertigo with 4-5/wk, dizzy spells in between, accompanied by spots in my visual field. Not to mention the Headaches after. ENT dr says it’s inner ear issues & wants to inject steroid into my ear… can someone please share if they have had this type of experience!

Do you have ménière's disease.
I have Vertigo with ménière's
Only after cutting out a stressful job has the Vertigo declined, hasn't stopped. But I usually have to sleep sometimes for hours, sometimes days. I had it since 2008 I have tried everything.

I do not have Meniere's. But I can understand how stress can exacerbate this. I am so sorry that you have dealt with it for so long and tried everything. I have a friend with M.D. who says too much sodium can bring on an episode of spinning and jumping. She has to take Valium to bring it back down.

The dr. did not mention MD disease and it is a diagnosis of exclusion so I am assuming he had assessed something other than MD. He just didn't want to be questioned...when I asked if it might possible help with migraines he said, "Oh, if you have migraines then that's neurology...you need CRG." and got up and left the room. Don't know what affronted him but I need specifics if the treatment option is to inject steroids into my ear!

Yeah I feel for your friend. Valium is very addictive. I try not to use prescription drugs,
I find pot is better it stops the Nausea and spinning, make you relax.
