Seizure during sleep?
I had recent very concerning " episode" few nights ago
I had gone to bed couple hours later than usual, took one Aleve as I do couple times week for knee pain, I remember being " awake" around 3 am with extreme shaking , arms and legs trembling, 8 could NOT wake myself up to get up, turn on light, next thing I know it's 10Am and I NEVER sleep that long.. checked pjs , bedding for incontinence, none , was groggy for couple hours,
Is it possible to be aware of a "seizure" but unable to wake up, the extreme sleep hours like post ictal?
It's been a week, I didn't alert pcp
I did have fall in December but ct of brain was okay at ER ..
Any ideas?

Is this your first potential seizure or do you have a seizure disorder, epilepsy perhaps?

1 ReactionI had similar incident last year, thought bedroom was too cold, 63( we're in Ca)
Tripped in December, face planted on hardwood floor, just abrasion above eye, checked in er
I'm not epileptic, have a disabled daughter with epilepsy ( been on here for her, zonisamide complications, lamictal etc)
and retired RN so know a little but my middle of nite episode scary.. I think I'll let PCP know but doubt she'll do much
All my labs fine, not diabetic, except cobalt, chromium in system from metal implant but regularly checked for levels, symptoms etc
Can't really figure this out..

Hi Maureen!
It's nice to hear from you again, though I'm truly sorry to learn about your recent experience.
You mentioned that you were aware throughout the episode — that detail stood out to me. I'm wondering whether this could possibly be a PNES episode — Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures.
I'm sharing a discussion from our group that you might find helpful:
Have nonepileptic seizures/psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES)?

Please do bring this up with your doctor — it's worth exploring. And do keep in touch!

1 ReactionLast December my wife called 911 in the middle of the night when I was thrashing around, calling out, but not conscious. Lots of diagnostic tests were inconclusive. Six months later, I had a similar episode. This time, testing pointed to seizures and I was hospitalized for four days. I have been medicating since with lacosamide and gabapentin. I've had no episodes since the June hospitalization. Testing has not revealed a root cause for the seizures. My neurologist says this is the case with about 50% of people with seizures. So far, the meds are doing their job but I guess I could have a breakthrough seizure anytime.

What a great milestone you've achieved, I'm so happy for you!
Consciousness is indeed one of the key differences between a tonic-clonic seizure and a PNES episode: during a true tonic-clonic, consciousness is lost, whereas in PNES it's typically preserved.
I know many people who have been seizure-free for years through medication alone — so savor this present moment!

1 ReactionHow do I know that I've had a seizure during sleep.
I have atomic seizures. 0 to 4 per month average.
Thanks in advance...

Hi Chris,
I had brought up the possibility of PNES before but he’s absolutely certain my condition is epilepsy.
I guessed the laceration in my brain, reflected via MRI, gave him that confidence in his diagnosis. @minajo Maureen, had you performed a MRI? I believe you had done blood, urine & CT.
Cheers,
Louis
I have a EEG Scheduled in June...
What should I expect from that?
Also have a MRI in June.
Thank you Joseph

Have they told you what type of EEG? They probably will do a routine EEG especially if this is your first one. A routine EEG doesn't last very long usually 20-30 minutes give or take. If your test is normal, but your doctor believes you have epilepsy he may want to do a longer test. Perhaps a sleep, deprived EEG or maybe an ambulatory EEG where you wear the electrodes for a few days or however, long the doctor chooses. You might want to ask your doctor if he wants you to get a normal nights sleep.
Have you had seizures other than Atonic?
Have you ever woke up confused or fallen out of bed?
Take care,
Jake
