Reclast infusion side effects?

Posted by ladybugnc @ladybugnc, May 26 2:38pm

I had the Reclast infusion 5 months ago in my left arm. I have started having pain in that arm now, with loss of strength. Has this happened to anyone else?

I did not get a reaction to Reclast. The day before the infusion and the day of the infusion, I drank a lot of water and took Tylenol. I also had my infusion over a 45-minute time period (had to be ordered by my physician) instead of the standard 15 minutes

You were one of the lucky ones! Glad for you!

I am glad to see these effects. I had androgen deprivation therapy (chemical castration) for prostate cancer and developed osteoporosis in my hip and osteopenia almost everywhere else as a result. The doctor wants to give me a reclast infusion but I was not told all the side effects of androgen deprivation--ED, anorgasmia, osteoporosis, heart problems, breast growth, weight gain around the waist/stomach, loss of muscle, depression, etc. This experience has, frankly, made me angry and completely distrust anything doctors want to give me other than pills which can be stopped quickly if bad side effects should occur. I think I am going to pass on reclast and just take my chances.

That is a lot to deal with and one can only imagine how difficult. Perhaps you can have a trial of Fosamax, which can be stopped if you have any additional issues. I did have issues with it and stopped after a few months. Years later, I agreed to Reclast even knowing they are in the same drug class. It has caused muscle/bone pain that flares off and on and has lasted so far 18 months. You have so much else going on that it's worth a hard look. Best wishes for some resolution and a treatment that works.

Has anyone had stomach pain after Reclast? I have gained 10 pounds and feel bloated and tired all the time. But the stomach pain is the worst. 7 months after the infusion. My doctor said I have a severe allergic reaction to the drug but have no advice on the side effects. I am 66 feeling like 96. Don’t see my grand children or friends or go to church anymore. Feeling desperate. Thanks.

lwidstrand, stomach pain is a common side effect from Reclast. Your doctor knows that you are having a sustained allergic reaction to Reclast. Ask if he can prescribe corticosteroid for you. Yes, steroids are hard on the bones, inflammation is harder on your bones. And inactivity can be devastating when you have osteoporosis.
I'm sorry you have having this experience. Some times the doctors prescribe a five day dose. In extreme cases IV steroids are more effective. I hope you can get relief.

Had my 5th Reclast infusion 8 months ago, fractured 2 ribs a month ago.
Reclast is definitely not working for me

Does this mean you've been on reclast for 5 years? What is the sequenceing plan for your Osteoporosis treatment?

I had the same reaction-don't recall the stomach pain but bloated, headaches, unable to focus, could not sleep for days at a time and awful bone pain all over my body. I also gained a lot of weight and had fatigue. If you read the side effects, which did after I got the infusion, you will see that you can end up with para-hypothyroidism which I did. I am on a rigid diet to see if I can get the weight off and will probably be on it the rest of my life. I refuse to take anything ever for osteoporosis as the medications are harsh. So sorry to hear about your experience. It is awful and it lasts for so long. You should start coming out it soon. I started feeling better about 9 months after I had the infusion.

dannyandebbie,
I was hoping you wouldn't follow the natural inclination to swear off all osteoporosis medications. Forteo and Tymlos are a completely different experience. They don't mess with your immune system, don't incur the risk of osteonecrosis, or atypical femur fractures. They don't commonly have the number of side effects.
And your (very good) rheumatologist could prescribe one or the other. I'd recommend Forteo not only because I like the drug so much that I hope never to stop injecting it, but because your possible fractures are in the spine where Forteo works best.
I hope you haven't fractured.

It is interesting how one can argument to rheumatologist that he should prescribe Forteo or other anabolic. In my case when I mentioned it, my doctor who prescribed Reclast looked offended and said that he knows better. He hinted that if I would not follow his advice, I´d better to another doctor. But I am still reluctant to start Reclast.

Whoa! That is not a response id have been pleased with if he were my provider. Sounds a bit defensive and imfantilizing. Have you considered getting a second opinion?

Melia, like gravity3, I'd be looking for another specialist, but you may not have that luxury.
Like you, I'd still be reluctant to start Reclast. You might have better luck with an endocrinologist as osteoporosis is primarily an endocrine disorder.
Still that spinal T -3 is reminding me of how unhappy you'll be if you fracture meanwhile.
Bless your bones.

My doctor has recommended ReClast for my osteoporosis but after reading about all of side effects I’m thinking of not getting it. I’m 85 and in good health with no bone breaks.
