Reclast infusion side effects?

Posted by ladybugnc @ladybugnc, May 26 2:38pm

I had the Reclast infusion 5 months ago in my left arm. I have started having pain in that arm now, with loss of strength. Has this happened to anyone else?

I want to relate my positive experience with Reclast as most of the posts would scare many away from it. I am 75 and just had my 5th Reclast infusion. I followed the suggestion of tylenol and staying hydrated before and after the infusion. I felt great afterwards, going to the gym, swimming. Then about 36 hours after the infusion, right before I went to bed I got flu like symptoms, chills and maybe a low fever, and just slept it off until noon the following day. Then I felt fine and resumed my daily activities! My bone scan prior to this showed some improvement (I have osteopenia) and no reduction in bone density. This could also be to my strength training with weights and my Vitamin D levels being back to normal. I've fallen several times over the past 5 years (skiing, slipping on ice, tripping over my dog!) but no fractures. In the 4 years before I started Reclast I had 3 fractures from very minor falls. I wanted to post my positive experience with Reclast and won't know until I meet with my endocrinologist later this year what other treatments might be recommended. In the meantime, I'll keep taking the Vitamin D and Calcium, and doing my weight strength training. I feel blessed to have had no other side effects. I don't believe there are many drugs that have no side effects, and remember that everyone's body is unique and will respond differently. Good luck to everyone on their journey to get stronger bones.

Thanks Maggie! I appreciate taking time to let all of us know the great response to Reclast you had. Glad you are doing great. Your reply helps to encourage me to take the step to get Reclast without worrying about the side effects.

Oh I am so sorry Danny and Debbie that u r having all this pain. Have not had an infusion
Recommended did not do it. Seeing the successful ones had a lot of preparation. No one prepared me at all. Could that be the problem. No prep!!

Reading all of this material about problems with Reclast. Many people said they felt fine before. I am assuming that most patients are middle aged at least. Could it be that it is such a shock to your system which has been perking along just fine. Shock!!

Unfortunately, I did no research until after the infusion. I truly wished I had. It’s been 14 months and my shoulders and left foot are by far the worse. There are day it take all I can to raise my arms ! Honestly, I push myself all the time to hopefully not allow the pain to take control. My endocrinologist wants me to try something different. He is right in a way, I’ll not be trying Anything more. I shared my symptoms and he recommended that I see a Rheumatologist. I made an appointment and not able to get in until 01/29/2026! Yet, Endocrinologist continues to call me to schedule an appointment for an injection of a different kind of medication; which I have declined. I had to start going to physical therapy biweekly since. The pain has continued since the infusion! Prior to the infusion I had zero pain and I wish I never had it done. As we age we all become more prone to bone fractures and I would have taken my chances! I hope this helps you! Really think, it’s your body and no one else can advocate for you except yourself!

I have a question. My Reclast infusion was in July 2024. I have had problems with sometimes significant muscle, joint and bone pain as well as acid reflux damage and some "minor" side-effects. The longer I get from the infusion, the better it gets, and it tends to come and go. However, something new just started a few weeks ago. I have significant lymph node pain under both arms with a nodule evident under one arm. Has anybody else experienced this?

With lymph node pain, I would strongly suggest contacting your PCP.
