Reclast infusion side effects?

Posted by ladybugnc @ladybugnc, May 26 2:38pm

I had the Reclast infusion 5 months ago in my left arm. I have started having pain in that arm now, with loss of strength. Has this happened to anyone else?

I’m so sorry for the pain you’re in.. my study is so similar to yours.. I’m on my second pack of prednisone pack. I can hardly lift my arms my shoulders hurt so bad..
The ER was totally not knowing what to do.. I said I wanted no pain meds I just wanted any answer if possible!!
I was just wondering did you see your neurologist and what did he say!
Thank you.
Hugs to you my friend!

Hi… I’m so sorry you’re going through the same thing I am. I’m now 11 weeks out from the Reclast IV, and in that time I’ve been through two rounds of Prednisone, countless medications to manage the stiffness and pain in the back of my skull and neck, an epidural to my upper spine (which only brought relief for two weeks), massages, physical therapy, a trip to the ER out of pure desperation, and even a consultation with a spine surgeon. Yet, not a single doctor seems to know how to address this, nor can anyone tell me when this medication will finally leave my body.
My endocrinologist (the one who administered the Reclast) refuses to acknowledge that the dose was far too high for my 100 lb frame, and has essentially dismissed my situation altogether. It feels like she’s just buried her head in the sand. Honestly, I believe there needs to be a class action lawsuit against Reclast.
At this point, I’ve lost hope that I’ll ever return to how I felt before Reclast. Aside from osteoporosis in my hips, I was a healthy, active woman, and now I feel completely crippled by this.

I had a severe autoimmune response to this drug. It started out with the quote normal flu like symptoms and then 48 hrs after I fainted and ended up having to call myself an ambulance. Thank God I woke up and was able to do so
My. Potassium Levi’s dropped so low ( hence the losing consciousness) I had to be treated twice. Severe esophagitis, acute Colitis
Couldn’t eat so I lost 10 pounds in two weeks. I only weighed 109 to begin with
I was unable to work for 6 weeks. My heart rate is all over the place still and I have been lightheaded for almost 7 months. What a nightmare.
And I know it was the Reclast because I was perfectly fine up until that shot.
Luckily no muscle pain.
I’m sorry you are suffering
I’m so angry for all of us

Thank you for this information! My doctor wants me to take Reclast since I could not tolerate Evenity, or Tymlos. I gained weight , belly fat with Evenity, and got covid, bad depression had to stop after 2 months.
Then I started Tymlos-gained more belly fat, bad back pain, I was on that 4 months, I had to quit because of the back pain.
I have bad osteoporosis, with past fractures in my spine, so I went to the Endo and he wanted to give me Reclast, but I am afraid I will get the bad side effects because it is very strong. Thank you for your information

dbunde, you probably don't want to give Tymlos another try, but you can take a lower dose with these pens. Then again Forteo is a lower dose. Forteo doesn't have the preservative that Tymlos has and you might have better luckf
You can also request a lower dose of Reclast which everyone should do because they know that 4mg is as effective as 5mg. A slower more dilute infusion would also reduce the chances of unpleasant side effects.
One of the doctors I see suggests an hour long infusion. It's safer for the kidneys.

I finally got to go see a Rheumatologist! She feels the Reclast caused inflammation in my shoulders and left foot. She has ordered prednisone, X-rays and blood work and inquired as to why no one from endocrinologist offered the prednisone at the least, being 14 months out. She expressed that I have two fractured vertebrae in my lower back and to avoid future I really do need something because one could fracture, pinch a nerve and not be able to walk! Not sure if this is a scare tactic to get me back to the endocrinologist or what. Will wait and see what X-rays and blood work say!

I am sorry you all are having problems! But I want to encourage you to stick with it under STRONGER doctor supervision and SUPPORT. I had the THE WORST side effects from Reclast - but the way I look at it is my body really NEEDED IT to jump start itself into bone rebuilding. They will do my next go around differently and the side effects won't happen because I will take the "precautions" which were NOT put in place the first time. I was put on TYMLOS and once again incurred the side effects so I restarted "titrating" up from 2 turns to 8 and after 2 months ALL side effects stopped magically - just as I was told they would. After 1.6 on Tymlos I will be switched and have to deal with the side effects again BUT - I am reminded from a nasty fall that I survived without breaking or fracturing anything at 68. A lot of side effects are not caused by the meds but by aging and other causes. I see that all the time. People want to blame EVERYTHING on the bone meds. I am grateful I am on them.

dannyandebbie,
I was hoping you wouldn't follow the natural inclination to swear off all osteoporosis medications. Forteo and Tymlos are a completely different experience. They don't mess with your immune system, don't incur the risk of osteonecrosis, or atypical femur fractures. They don't commonly have the number of side effects.
And your (very good) rheumatologist could prescribe one or the other. I'd recommend Forteo not only because I like the drug so much that I hope never to stop injecting it, but because your possible fractures are in the spine where Forteo works best.
I hope you haven't fractured.

My Rheumatologist says I do have two lower vertebrae that are fractured and she fears the results should I fractured another. I am waiting the results of the X-ray and bloodwork, next Monday; over 14 months out. There are side effects to just about any medication….you know how they say, it could effect one in a million, well, I feel I fall in that category almost always! This past 14 months have not been enjoyable at all!

I am contemplating getting the Reclast Infusion. Is there anyone that HAS NOT gotten any reactions to Reclast?

Jump to this post

I did not get a reaction to Reclast. The day before the infusion and the day of the infusion, I drank a lot of water and took Tylenol. I also had my infusion over a 45-minute time period (had to be ordered by my physician) instead of the standard 15 minutes

I am glad to see these effects. I had androgen deprivation therapy (chemical castration) for prostate cancer and developed osteoporosis in my hip and osteopenia almost everywhere else as a result. The doctor wants to give me a reclast infusion but I was not told all the side effects of androgen deprivation--ED, anorgasmia, osteoporosis, heart problems, breast growth, weight gain around the waist/stomach, loss of muscle, depression, etc. This experience has, frankly, made me angry and completely distrust anything doctors want to give me other than pills which can be stopped quickly if bad side effects should occur. I think I am going to pass on reclast and just take my chances.
