Post COVID hair loss: Will it grow back?

Posted by nichirschfield @nichirschfield, Feb 2, 2022

My husband had severe COVID in late Oct/early November, and now his hair is falling out rapidly. Has anyone else experienced this, and did it grow back?

Thanks,
Nicole

Thanks so much for the reply. So many of my friends that had chemo hair loss have also had your experience, and I so appreciate the "upbeat answer. My situation is ongoing long Covid, over a year now, with constant low grade temp in the 99's. It is the long Covid condition that is also of interest to me regarding hair loss. My understanding is that at age 80, perhaps long Covid is here to stay, and I am wondering if hair loss is here to stay as well. My own bout with Covid was not nearly as severe as yours, which sounds perfectly awful. I'm so sorry for all of us! And now, one new strain after another.....

Glad for you—as it relates to your hair. Mine has filled in to some degree but you can still see right through it to my scalp. I'm hope to see more improvement over time.

I am just wondering if anyone with long Covid has continuing hair loss, and if it ever stops while long Covid is still present. I've had long Covid for one year, hair loss for one year, no new growth. 80 year old female, autoimmune issues......
thanks to all who reply to these comments and questions that seem to be an affliction our children and grandchildren will continue to have to deal with....

My hair improved after Covid but I believe that occurred because I needed an iron supplement—it's still far from perfect and the condition did not exist prior to the virus. Ever since Covid, I've also had shortness of breath (2-½ yrs) which I also believe to be the result of Covid...considering the amount since, this is either long Covid or permanent damage to my lungs as a result of Covid.

Yes. My hair is falling out and I have lost 20 lbs. Still losing! Don’t know what to do. Drs even deny Post Covid symptoms. All in my head! 😢

I feel your pain. I have lost thirty pounds and my hair is falling out by the handful. Doctors only use protocols for what they know. Most know NOTHING about Long Covid symptoms. I was healthy and active until this. Now I am basically an invalid just trying to get through each day.
God help us.

Exactly right. The person I was is gone. There is just a shell left. I go to worthless doctor appointments, and that’s about it.
Without my family I would never have survived the last year and a half. One of my biggest sorrows is losing my grandchildren. I try, but noise and activity is too much for me. I pray to come back enough to again have a relationship with them, and all my family. I don’t even ask to get back to where I was....just SOME improvement and relief. No one has an answer.

My doctor prescribed Biotin (otc). Between that and my nutrition improving, it has stopped falling out. Waiting to see if it grows back more but it seems much healthier.

They have decided to put me on cymbalta. I feel nothing now, good or bad. Graves’ disease, neuropathy, deterioration of my hip and coccyx, and many other issues. I think I should feel something…but I feel nothing. Long covid has taken my very existence.
