My dad had IAAA repair last November, now needs triple bypass:( Scared
Scared daughter here and new to this community. Last fall my dad had inflammatory aortic aneurysm repair surgery, a 10 hour procedure and now a year later needs a triple bypass which he will have in 10 days. I’m so sad and scared for him, recovery was rough th first few days and I know he is really dreading that again. The waiting was excruciating last year, and selfishly I am dreading that too. We are told his surgery is a little more complex than most because of so many calcified arteries and also because of his operation last year. He said his risk of stroke or heart attack is a bit higher during or after surgery- aboit 10%, and risk of anything else happening about 5%. I know those are still relatively low but he’s 72 and you just never know. He is a worrier even though he won’t admit it and I just want him to be okay so he can enjoy the retirement he worked so hard for and not to be in constant pain. I know we are at the best place possible but things can happen. I was never super close with my dad until the last 5-10 years, as I have grown into an adult myself.

@liv-tru Welcome to connect where you will receive responses from so many people who care for each other and our here to listen @help while you wait for others to chime in I can tell you of my triple by pass it was in 1996and I had calcified arteries ,85%,90%@95% I was in the hospital for 5days then sent home to rehabilitate Im sure your Dad will go to rehab after his surgery Dr.knew I was a nurse and in good physical health otherwise he would have sent me to rehab .your Dad,s previous operation will be a little harder but shouldn't hinder him.Im now 76 and still going every day exercise @eating right is the key no junk food.
Hi @liv_tru, welcome to Connect. It is reasonable to be concerned when a loved one is facing such a complex surgery. Thank you @lioness for sharing your story. In addition, I would like to invite some more members who have experienced a triple bypass surgery who may be able to talk with you more about the experience and recovery. @sammysky, @aaaporterhouse, @sonyaparkey, @ronitb, and @smallpartice have all discussed a triple bypass for themselves or a loved one. @liv_tru, if you don't mind sharing, what concerns you the most about the surgery?
Hi and thank you for the replies!! I couldn’t login so I had to make a new sign-in. Anyways- I’m worried the most that two major operations in a years time is going to be tough on him. His blood pressure got really low last surgery- only about 30 seconds, but still. His pressure has been a bit lower too as of recently, but I think they have it under control now. Just scared that something will happen, unforeseen. Dr said it will be a little more complex than a usual bypass and that he is a little higher risk because of that. I’m just dreading it and want it to be over. The idea of stopping his heart and lowering his body temperature is terrifying 😟
@livtru That certainly is a concern for any operation ,a person takes that risk when going under but if your Dad is in good health otherwise and the Dr feels comfortable with doing his surgery ,just believe he will be o.k.The Dr wouldn't put him in jeopardy just lift him up ,think positive ,.
