Culture-Bound Stress Disorder

Posted by @1000016352, Jun 19, 2017

As is reported in many researches and clinics, ethno-cultural variations in trauma has a significant role in human being way of life. That conclusion based on environmental factors taking into considerations and the risk factors beside the individual psychological factors. As many trauma incidents occurred around us today all over the world I love to discuss with the members the idea that if there is a relation between the brain & nervous System and the ethno-cultural variations with the variation of the stressors. I believe personally that stressors in each society may create negative influences on the development of the brain and the Nervous system. I would like to hear from others their opinions and their beliefs.

Hi @1000016352,
What a great question to discuss and debate with fellow Connect members. You touch on many complex contributors. I wonder if we might unpack your question. You say that you believe that “stressors in each society may create negative influences on the development of the brain and the Nervous system.” Are you specifically referring to the developing brain, as in children, or changes to the brain as adults coping with stressors?

I believe it is a great question to be discussed and it is opened for both situations, but in children developmental stages would be very helpful in avoiding many complex negative issues that would a child face in time when changing is hard and lead to dysfunctional acts.
Thank you Colleen for your question!

Hello @1000016352 You have shared some very thoughtful conversation starters. Could you narrow it down to one or two specific questions for discussion on Mayo Connect? Teresa
