Cac score, scared

First post
So 69 year old female
Cholesterol 228
Hdl 47
LDL been increasing 143
Triglycerides 235
Lpa 0
Doctor suggested a CAC scan as we discussed statins
CAME BACK 1282!
LAD 832 RAC 450 other 3 arteries 0
Have cardiologist in 5 weeks and endocrinologist as thyroid TSH way up to 8.98
Gp wants to me start pravastatin 10 mg immediately. Too low?
So can we anyone help calm me down as I didn’t think my numbers were that bad and was prepared for maybe 300s but yikes.
Feel like heart attack is waiting to happen? Just laying on couch.
Please share that I do I need to freak out?
I read statin can help lower TSH SO MAYBE that would be best first as synthroid can reduce statin effects and hurt kidneys.
Thoughts on the LAD? Is that crazy score?
Why are 3 arteries 0?
Appreciate advice as I read posts

Thank you so much for commenting. Truly appreciate it.
I have had sweet tooth whole life but don’t eat red meat, smoke or drink.
I hear you on eating better.
What’s your best snack choice?
I’m looking at food delivery services.
Fingers crossed on PET
Waiting weeks to see cardio is so anxiety inducing.
How often do you see cardio now?

@rowan47 I hear you on the sweets. I love them too! One of the best things I did was meet with a nutritionist. There's so much conflicting information out there. They can help you with some ideas on diet based on what you like. For sweets I have always loved dark chocolate so I have a couple small squares every few days. It's minimal but still delicious. I like the no sugar added Kind bars. For sweetener in coffee and oatmeal I like the Jocko vanilla protein drinks. I'm not an expert but have learned to read labels and try to make the best choices for me.
Saying all of this, you still have to enjoy life and food is a big part of that. The key is to find new things you like to eat that aren't hurting you. If you always feel like you are sacrificing, it's not sustainable. This has all changed my fear and mental well being in regards to my high score. I know that I've stopped the progression of plaque and if I keep on this path, I should live a good life. We aren't guaranteed anything but I feel good about myself and how I'm treating my body now.
Wishing you the best and try to schedule something with a nutritionist. You can do it!

Here's a link to the American Heart Association risk calculator: https://professional.heart.org/en/guidelines-and-statements/prevent-calculator

It's what a cardiologist might use to calculate your risk of an event over the coming years. Based on that score, different treatments might be offered.

Due to my family history and inherited high cholesterol, after my CAC test I was immediately put on Repatha, which was an addition to the statin and etizimibe I was already taken, and told my LDL needs to be under 50 (I started at LDL of 250 before the statin and around 110 before Repatha). I'm now at an LDL of 16, along with 5-6 days a week of cardio exercise and a mostly plant based diet. At 71, it's all I can do to lower the risks.

Take a deep breath, get facts and data, and make your decisions from there. Good luck

This one accommodates over 300 Cac score. Why can’t they say 85% chance of not having an event? So much more positive? mesa-nhlbi dot org

Congrats for 8 years.
What did serious indigestion feel like?
I’ve always had heartburn.
What statins were you on?
Are you still on them?

@rowan47
It felt like upset stomach-not heartburn, which I get on occasion.
I was on Atorvastatin, 40mg nightly. Now that I've watched my diet, especially animal fats, I take half of a 10mg Atorvastatin tablet every other night. My LDL is 51.
I know a man who had a score of 1650. He was told this at a Cardiologist visit who sent him right to the hospital for his bypass. He had no symptoms!

Had a CAC of 716, no symptoms started Rosuvastatin 20mg, had a clear Stress test and good Echo, 12 months later started having minor chest discomfort not induced by exercise. Heart cath showed 4 blocks (70, 80,80,90). 1 stent installed in LAD (80%). Rosuvastatin increased to 40mg, Zetia 10mg , metoprolol 25mg, Losarton 25mg, 4 months later started later chest pains became more consistent, still just dull ache. Another heart cath and 2 more stents, just went on Rapatha. LDL consistently in 130’s before anything, down to low 50’s prior to Rapatha, probably will be down in the high teens low 20’s. My LCX was 90% LAD was 80%, after second heart cath LAD doing good around 30% with stent.
Male, Age 59, no family history, no smoke, LPa was 165.

I had 1350 on my score. I was just taking statins and doing OK. One week I had mild indigestion.
Then one Wednesday night I had serious indigestion and drove myself to the hospital.
An enzyme in my blood was indicating heart problems. Friday morning I had a Cardio Catherization. The head of cardiac surgery said that people with this much blockage don't survive a heart attack. Monday morning I had my CABG. That was eight years ago!

Why was your surgery done on Monday morning and not on the previous Friday?

You sound like me....I am 70 with inherited family cholesterol..been on and off stations for 20 years...finally stopped them because of leg muscle issues. I had a CABGX3 in 2014; that has now closed up. My heart is now running on 2 HP rather than 6 Horsepower per my next level Interventional Cardiologist from Duke Hospital. I've been on Repatha and Zetia since Feb. '26 which brought my LDL down to 202 after being at 298. I find this world of Cholesterol and numbers so questionable. I am now living off of heart meds to alleviate the Angina symptoms. I've been on plant based eating for 5 years.

Good luck to you....and may God help us all!

p.s. to anybody on stations...when I was on Crestor 20 mg for several years, my A1C went up to pre-diabetic numbers... so I stopped the statins. It's like you take one thing to stop cholesterol and then it starts up another bad thing in your body. I really think the answers are out there in the medical community but they are being withheld from the masses to feed the big money machine.

May I ask why on and off? Didn’t know one can stop
Do your numbers get better or are side effects bad?
How has repatha compared?
