Cac score, scared

Posted by rowan47 @rowan47, 23 hours ago

First post
So 69 year old female
Cholesterol 228
Hdl 47
LDL been increasing 143
Triglycerides 235
Lpa 0
Doctor suggested a CAC scan as we discussed statins
CAME BACK 1282!
LAD 832 RAC 450 other 3 arteries 0
Have cardiologist in 5 weeks and endocrinologist as thyroid TSH way up to 8.98
Gp wants to me start pravastatin 10 mg immediately. Too low?
So can we anyone help calm me down as I didn’t think my numbers were that bad and was prepared for maybe 300s but yikes.
Feel like heart attack is waiting to happen? Just laying on couch.
Please share that I do I need to freak out?
I read statin can help lower TSH SO MAYBE that would be best first as synthroid can reduce statin effects and hurt kidneys.
Thoughts on the LAD? Is that crazy score?
Why are 3 arteries 0?
Appreciate advice as I read posts

The score is just a snapshot of what exists in the locations where it was seen, and the number compares to others with varying degrees of deposition. Your number is high, but you're asymptomatic and you've caught it before 'The Big One.' So, the score is only somewhat predictive of a danger over the next years, but probably NOT something to worry about for the next full year, during which you will receive treatment. Had you reported to us that you do have symptoms, then my previous statements would have been couched in more supportive and encouraging terms such as, 'Do work closely with your physicians to get any further deterioration slowed drastically or stopped.'

BTW, people post here all the time with higher scores, so you can't claim to be at the top of any heap I'm aware of. 😀

I really like this gentleman physician. He gives balanced information (I'm not him, and don't know him or have any financial ties to him in any way, just a fan):

rowan47, that is a crazy LAD score. CAC can't tell you how occluded the artery is though. Tech and tests are fallible sometime a mistake in transcription can scare the daylight.
I deflated high triglycerides with folate (methyl folate Jarrow brand).
The usually start the statins low and build. The prevastatin dose range is 10 to 80. 40mg to 80mg is the therapeutic range. Rouvastatin is a stronger medication.
Normal range is less than 100.
Low thyroid reduces ldl receptors in your liver preventing the liver from clearing them.
There are some newer medication for ldl enlicitide that I've been looking at. I'd be letting the cardiologist figure it but I'd be trying to get in sooner on a cancellation.
Have you had a treadmill stress test. You won't even get an internal angiogram unless your heart shows signs of struggle.
You shouldn't stress (it's easy to say). You are getting timely treatment.

@gently well I appreciate your reply, telling me my LAD is crazy, freaks me out more. Will get rechecked

Sorry rowan. Your cholesterol doesn't look that bad, especially compared to mine, except the triglycerides.

I had 1350 on my score. I was just taking statins and doing OK. One week I had mild indigestion.
Then one Wednesday night I had serious indigestion and drove myself to the hospital.
An enzyme in my blood was indicating heart problems. Friday morning I had a Cardio Catherization. The head of cardiac surgery said that people with this much blockage don't survive a heart attack. Monday morning I had my CABG. That was eight years ago!

Congrats for 8 years.
What did serious indigestion feel like?
I’ve always had heartburn.
What statins were you on?
Are you still on them?

Hi Rowan, wanted to comment here as I can relate to the anxiety you are feeling. Almost a year and a half ago I had a CAC test done and it came back 1168. Needless to say, I was freaked out. Had no symptoms. I see a lot of posts that people eat well, exercise regularly and all the right things and are shocked by their scores. I know there are genetic factors but the more I've learned about food, the reality is I really didn't eat that great, even though I thought I was.
Your next steps should be with a cardiologist to determine if you have blockage. I was extremely lucky that my PET Scan showed no blocked and normal profusion. It was the best news I could have received. I viewed it as a second chance.
You caught your issue before an event so you also have a second chance. I met with a dietician and completely altered my diet. The key thing is I don't feel like I've sacrificed food. There are lots of delicious things that are good for you. And to be honest, the thought now of eating a donut has zero appeal. I'd rather be here on earth longer than the second of pleasure from a donut.
Wishing you the best. Learn about how food affects your condition and make the changes. The mental motivation can be strong if you let it and don't let yourself feel like you have no hope. Because you do.

Thank you so much for commenting. Truly appreciate it.
I have had sweet tooth whole life but don’t eat red meat, smoke or drink.
I hear you on eating better.
What’s your best snack choice?
I’m looking at food delivery services.
Fingers crossed on PET
Waiting weeks to see cardio is so anxiety inducing.
How often do you see cardio now?
