Cac score, scared
First post
So 69 year old female
Cholesterol 228
Hdl 47
LDL been increasing 143
Triglycerides 235
Lpa 0
Doctor suggested a CAC scan as we discussed statins
CAME BACK 1282!
LAD 832 RAC 450 other 3 arteries 0
Have cardiologist in 5 weeks and endocrinologist as thyroid TSH way up to 8.98
Gp wants to me start pravastatin 10 mg immediately. Too low?
So can we anyone help calm me down as I didn’t think my numbers were that bad and was prepared for maybe 300s but yikes.
Feel like heart attack is waiting to happen? Just laying on couch.
Please share that I do I need to freak out?
I read statin can help lower TSH SO MAYBE that would be best first as synthroid can reduce statin effects and hurt kidneys.
Thoughts on the LAD? Is that crazy score?
Why are 3 arteries 0?
Appreciate advice as I read posts

74 year old male active golfer, daily & exercise with Mild Afib - <2%. LBBB. Controlled High B/P. 6’. 248lbs. (working on weight loss). Statin prescribed for 15 years to “ stick any plaque to the walls and make sure it stays there” by my 20 year Primary Doc. 3 years ago I had several PVCs during an outpatient surgery that led to first Cardiologist visit and found the AFIB and LBBB. Also found a 40% blockage in the joint of the LAD and C1 Arteries. Cardiologist ran CAC test and I scored 2000. I freaked out and Cardiologist said “no worries”. “We’ve got many other patients with much higher CAC scores than that”.

1 ReactionWell glad you’re here.
Guess the statins did their work
May I ask what you’re on?
Did cardio change anything based on your CAC score?
@prunella1111 I'm dealing with the pre diabetes numbers but staying on the high statin dose, as I've decided that the lesser of the evils. I'm not sure the money for the generic drugs is feeding the industry, at least for a statin, which I get 90 days dose at no charge to me under my medicare part D program. Previously, it was about $8 for 90 days using Cost Plus Drugs.
@rowan47 Atoravastatin. Surprising thing is he doesn’t seem to be concerned. Appears there is some disagreement among the experts as to how much and when excess calcium in the system creates problems. He has done an arteriogram that identified a 40% blockage at the junction of the LAD and Left Circumflex. But says he won’t deal with that until it gets to be 70% or more.
Cut out all animal fats. Get a Calcium Scoring test to see blockage in your coronary arteries.
My score was high 600’s so one day I got shortness of breath and I went to the ER and was told no heart problems. I went to a cardiologist who gave me a stress test and found out I had exercised induced high blood pressure. I was put on diltiazem and upped my atoravstin to 40mg. I was given a heart catheterization which is the easiest test I’ve ever had and that was all clear. I walk about 5-6 miles a day. I went to a pulmonary doctor and I had a chest ct and pft done and she said I have reduced lung function from childhood asthma and that’s why my lungs have pressure on them . I try to eat right and get plenty of exercise. I first panicked like you when I heard my cac score but now I don’t worry anymore.

1 ReactionMy CAC score was 1200 that scared me since I was told 300 was the norm. My new cardiologist took me off Pravastatin 40mg and put me on Rosuvastatin Calcium at 40 mg. Does anyone have any experience with Rosuvastatin Calcium?
Your LPa was zero which is excellent for the next 10 years. That’s plenty of time to turn back the clock so to speak and get healthy. Better late than never.
@jenatsky thank you. That helps a lot.
@ewei6911 I didn’t tolerate Atorvastatin well, lots of aches and pains, went to 20mg Rosuvastatin and then to 40mg after my stent. I take 300mg CoQ10, it seems to help. No real pains to speak of, just started Rapatha and Zetia.
