Anxiety and frustration after cardioversion after 3rd ablation

Posted by ev1 @ev1, Apr 30, 2023

I had my 3rd ablation in January for afib. All was great until yesterday morning when I woke up in fast afib. I was so angry which of course didn't help. I went to A& E and I was cardioverted after a few hours. All grand again. How do I stop the anxiety & frustration and of course the worry? I really don't want a 4th ablation. Could it be that I am still healing after January's ablation.?Any little pice of advice would be appreciated.

I do find that prayer helps dealing with the unknown future of a fib . There are some medications being tested , particularly one that is for diabetes . It has similar bio markers for a fib, so hopefully it will pass the tests and be available in the near future.
I find that breathing exercises that are directly related to a form of meditation help with anxiety. I would recommend reading the book " Breathe " that is a best seller. Amazing story and in depth exercises for breathing that are unique.

Thank you. I will get the book you recommended as I do know it is essential to breathing properly in order to relax. I am also starting meditation classes soon. Anything that might help. Thank you again.

Thank you so much. I too suffer from panic attacks & anxiety but I really do think it's the fear of the unknown etc. I take metacor 25mgs 4 times daily. I pray that my heart is still healing & I have to learn to relax when I am in an episode. Easier said then done. Thank you again. Lovely to hear from you.

I trust he is giving the doctors the knowledge to treat this Afib. Please believe no matter how afraid you get,I believe it’s going to get better.we need to think yes it’s scary but I’m going to get relief soon.If you need someone to talk to I’m here. I always need encouragement and I sure do me to learn more about Afib.God bless

I’m getting my 2nd ablation next week May 17th 2023. My last one was June 2020. I know you’re only suppose to be in the hospital over night but I was there 6 days last time. I really don’t know why. I never saw my doctor during that time. I’m 71 and I’m scared to death to go through this again. Please pray for me. Thank you. I’ll pray for you and all others too. 🙏

I know I have mentioned this book before, but I continue to see questions here that are clearly explained in the book, "The AFIB Cure..." by two prominent EP's John Day MD and Jared Bunch MD, both well known experts in the field. While early ablation is strongly recommended in the book, it is NOT the AFIB cure by itself. Ablation gives us time to make or complete a list of lifestyle changes that can complete the cure, and of course, the list is different for each patient, but things like dealing with the anxiety you mention in your post are certainly among the initiatives the book outlines. Good luck to you on this unique journey we all face.

I don’t blame you for feeling that way. I found out 4 months ago I had Afib. I had an ablation on march 28/2023.All went well. I did have this little flipping in my heart because I’ve had PVC’s for years so I thought maybe that was happening. I had no Afib.Last week my starters beating so irregular and then it was racing so fast.134 beats a minute. I got so scared. I called the doctor he said I’m in the healing period.I’m a Christian so I’ve been trusting in the lord because he’s the one my healing comes from.He guides the doctors hands.I pray you can trust in God because no matter what happens to me he will help me through it.In time the fear and anxiety will be gone.God bless you.. I will be praying for you 🙏🤗

Everyone is different, but here is my experience for what it's worth: I exercise and eat smartly (low in calories, sugar, and salt). I had mitral valve repair, ablation, and LAAC at 78, almost a year ago. No more AFIB (it can work permanently). Off of Eliquis after four months, after wearing heart monitor for 30 days to be sure AFIB was gone. Daily I take only 12.5mg metoprolol, 81mg aspirin, and 29% of RDA magnesium ( I have read that magnesium and moderate exercise help to stay out of AFIB). I had a great surgeon at WakeMed in Raleigh, Dr. Boulton, who did all of the heart stuff. That was key of course. Best to you.

I hope nobody will be offended by my contrary and blunt assessment (such as it can be from a non-physician posting here, which describes me). From what I have read, and I've done tons of reading and digesting, the blanking period works best, statistically, empirically, when the brief episodes of breakthrough AF happen during the first three weeks after an ablation. If they begin to crop up later, and very certainly after ten weeks, then the prognosis is not good. Sorry. My assumption is that AF developing after the 8-10 week blanking period is not a good sign, and the previous ablation can be considered a failure.

To pile on with the bluntness (sorry), it might be wise to consider seeing a different electrophysiologist. Do some research and find the best one referentially within a day's drive, or a four hour flight, and ask to see that person. If they're really busy, in high demand, and have excellent stats, you'll have the biggest hammer on the block working to put you right...this time. Google 'best electrophysiologists in the USA' or something like that and see what you find.

I'm not an expert, but there doesn't appear to be a reasoned 'cure' for AF. It's a progressive disease, as all the peer-reviewed literature says it is. It can be delayed, retarded, abetted, whatever other word for slowing its progress will work for you, but it will eventually come back. A second, third, fourth, fifth ablation might work, maybe not, but I would happily submit to a good EP who felt that he/she could stave off those intrusive characteristics of recurrent AF. I have ended the blanking period after a second ablation inside of seven months, and it worked! I even swung a mattock (pole-ax) repeatedly at the roots of a shrub yesterday and got my heart up to at least 150 BPM (not bad for a 70 year-old male). As far as I know, my heart just slowed naturally when I stopped, and I went on to do other things around the garden with apparent impunity.

Ablations are good!
