Oral lichen Planus: What home remedies or medications help you?

Posted by lovebug61 @lovebug61, Apr 4, 2019

Anyone in the group suffer from Oral Lichen Planus. I am at my wits end with all these erosive sores in my mouth. I've had two biopsies , one in the inside cheek and one under the side of my tongue. The spot under the tongue is extremely sore to touch and has been for over a year. It scares me because the soreness never goes away, sometimes it isn't as sore but nothing helps. Any home remedies for this dreadful condition?

After suffering with ELP consistently, my dentist suggested trying some laser treatments on the affected areas of my mouth. Finally SUCCESS! I was shocked at how well this responded when nothing else worked. Might not work for everyone but it has made my mouth feels nearly "normal ". Talk to your dentist and the incredible doctors Mayo.

@dreamer60 that’s just wonderful! Did your dentist say if this is a forever cure or will it have to be repeated occasionally? What led you and the dentist to try lasers?
Can you tell us more about the whole experience?

@colleenyoung Hello Colleen. I'm delighted at the wonderful news from @dreamer60 that laser treatments have worked a miracle for their oral lichen planus! That gives new hope to so many that suffer from it.
I, too, have some good news to share regarding oral lichen planus. After 3 or 4 doctors' "diagnoses" and countless prescriptions, I finally had an oral biopsy and, Wow! I don't have oral lichen planus! Mine is related more to my IBD, just as I've been suggesting to my doctors, and after the extensive research I've done over the past years. I've undergone scope tests, etc., this week so will have a firm diagnosis from my G.I. in another week or two, and might just learn how to control THAT! Lol
Hope is on the horizon!!
Warm regards, Laurie

I have lichen sclerosis which is an autoimmune disease affecting the genital area as well as some other areas like arms and legs. Recently developed a sore mouth no cured by antifungal mouthwash. My ENT asked me if I thought it could be related to my lichen sclerosis. I said I didn’t think so and he said well I do think so. He referred me to a mouth specialist at the university hospital and I am still waiting for an appointment. Relevant comments please.

@willows - none of the anti fungal mouthwashes worked for me as well as Lyderm gel did. It is for topical use but can be used off label for the mouth too. Tasted horribly bitter, but cleared my mouth as well as genital area, even though I only applied the gel on my gums/cheeks inside my mouth.

The laser treatment that @dreamer60 had seems to be an even better solution, however.

My dentist sent a biopsy of my sore gums to a lab and the diagnosis was lichen Planus.
That was 2015. It still comes and goes.

As a professional flutist I can't imagine getting this. I'm a horn player and suffer from canker sores, but they go away. I agree with your doctor about going to a learning medical center. I hope they will have suggestions for you. How have the steroids be affecting you? Are they also helping the lower lip (so crucial for the flute)?

I'm sorry not have have responded in twoish years. I dont want to keep using steroids.
My life as a flutist has totally changed. I am about to start playing for hospice patients hopefully eliminating stress and hope to give some joy to others!
I use a toothpaste called Sguigle and it doesn't burn!! Good luck to all!

So good to hear from you again, Robin. Performing for patients and their families in hospice must be so rewarding. What a gift you offer many.

I have been diagnosed with lichen planus and as a professional flutist, it is ruining my life!! I am now thinking of a nutritionist and doing an elimination diet. Any thoughts? My oral surgeon is suggesting going to University of Pa. to find out more info. Right now, I cannot perform professionally. thick lower lip, dry, scaly and numb. The inside has been getting better as I have been on steroids for almost one month.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks!
