Pain around pacemaker site

Posted by dorothynoz45 @dorothynoz45, Jun 22, 2019

I am getting very frustrated with this situation. I have had my pacemaker for over 2 years and I still have the same cramping ache at the site that I experienced after the implant. No one takes me seriously. I have been trying to rattle the cardiology office cage for a week and 1/2 now. Several weeks ago it got worse; woke me up at night and in the morning it hurt so bad that twice I couldn't stand straight. It seems to harder to stand up when I get up and start moving. I can't get past the phone nurse. She left a voice mail for me ' that it couldn't possibly be the device because I've had it so long. That it must be something else.' Dr. told me they could re position it but didn't like to for fear of infection. I am posting because after this long of time, although I've been told nothing can be done about it, I don't want this in my life anymore. Has this happened to anyone else?

I am experiencing the same issues. Mine was inserted on August 4 2020. It’s always been uncomfortable and hurts when I turn over at night. Now I am having high heart rates and sharp jabs in my left shoulder area and pacemaker area. I have an appointment in the morning. Hopefully will get resolved.

@stormlyn Hi I thought I might mention a strange feeling my wife had after her Covid Shot. It was some discomfort in the area where the pacemaker usually sits. She doesn't have a pacemaker but I thought I might mention that. It was on the same side as where she received the vaccine. So might be a possibility the newer discomfort from that. It did pass and She no longer is having an issue.
I once had a pacemaker until my heart transplant so I know a little but never any sharp pain just it would get itchy at times. Plus laying on that side did at times cause some discomfort.
I hope all goes well with your Dr apt.
Blessings

I had that problem. They moved the site to the other side and also did a nerve block. That happened to me while I was living on Nc though and was at Duke. They said it’s from the nerves growing back. That wasy case I am not a doctor and I am not saying that’s your situation. That happened years after my implantation.

Hi , Iam "Soldier 0461". I am new to this site> Here is my story: I am very fit having been an athlete all my life and a full career in the Army. My problem started when I had a blood pressure test and it was found that my Heart beat was only 29bpm yet! I felt good and still training every day with no symptoms of illness. It was arranged for me to have a Pace Maker fitted. The operation was to take 1hr 30 mins, indeed half way through the procedure I was rushed to the X-ray dept. for an X-ray. I was returned to the operating table and it took another 1hr 30 minutes to finish. . The surgeon later came to have a chat with me and advised me that during the operation when inserting a wire in my chest from the pace maker a vein had been punctured and the left ventricle of my heart scored.. He advised me that it was caused by a surgeon that he was training . He then gave me some paperwork and said if I wished to put in a formal complaint and to claim compensation to complete the forms. I said, I didn't want to claim any compensation as it was simply an accident and not done with any malicious intent. Summary> I feel fit and well, still training but less than I used to. I didn't realise the restrictions to ones daily life with a Pace Maker, Not allowed to lift anything heavy, not allowed to lift anything above ones head, not allowed do the crawl when swimming. No Contact sports, But I can still make love. [carefully] Update> 2 months later each time I yawn , sneeze, cough or take a deep breath I get a sharp pain in my chest as if pricked with a pin, lasts less than a second. I am burping quite a lot, I get pins and needles in my hands and feet and cramp in my legs, but other than that I feel good. My heart beat is a constant 60bpm but occasionally I have heart palpitations for about a minute. Question> Am I glad I had a Pace Maker fitted, Honestly> I am not sure as my life has been impacted so much with the restrictions of a pace maker, my life has changed dramatically. Oh yes and on top of this I have leukaemia.

Who put in your pacemaker? If it was the army you need to go somewhere else to get it checked out not
The va! You should be able to lift weights after the few weeks of recovery! If they hit your ventricle that is very very bad. I had a problem
With a military hospital and if I could of sued I would of. Luckily I was just military wife any patents flew to fort Bragg and came and got me and brought me to Mayo. My mayo dr was pissed at Womack. They didn’t do things right! They didn’t even have certified specialists in certain departments. God. Also I am sorry you have leukemia . But there isn’t any limitations really with a pacemaker I mean there is a few but it’s
Mostly things you can’t got buy or put
By the area. I am kind of
Concerned by your post. I hope you are okay….

I had a.Pacemaker placed July 2020 & I am having the same pain all of you are describing, mine got infected right after surgery so it took longer to heal, but I have the burning, it always feels swollen, sometimes it is just unbearable!! I went back to the surgeon so many times that the last time, he said, "I don't know what to do for you except to just take it out", my heart rate in the hospital before my surgery dropped between 30 to 40 over a period of 3 hrs, so I looked at him & said well don't I need this to live, & he said yes, but I don't know what else to do!!! Needless to say I found another specialist! She is going to do an Echo to see if my lead wires have come loose, so at least they are trying to find out the problem. I will let you know.

I got my pacemaker in Nov. 2021. I have pain between the pacemaker and my arm pit. When I get up in the morning I sometimes feel warmth at the pacemaker sight. Saw my doctor last week and got no resolution. I understand your frustration.

I am so sorry you are you are experiencing this. Yes, definitely get a second opinion. I have basically learned about my condition via Dr. Google. Local cardiologists have not been much help at all. Just heard the term LBBB left bundle branch block from a nurse practitioner when I had my first appt. with a new cardiologist (he was too busy to see me). She informed me I needed a CRT (pacemaker) implanted and would need to wear a "vest" until it could be done. She got me all lined up with the "vest" company to come to my house and for the procedure to be done in a few weeks. Found out she must have been going by an earlier Echocardiogram which had my EF at 10-15%. She should have looked further in my file where a more recent Echo had my EF at 45.9%. And of course, layman that I am, I didn't put 2 and 2 together right away about the role EF plays in LBBB. Needless to say, my husband and I spent an upsetting evening until I figured out what had happened after googling again and discussing it with my cardiac rehab nurse. For someone new to a heart condition and never on any medication until Feb 2022, this was very upsetting. On the advise of one of the mentors with this Mayo Clinic group I have an appt with a university hospital where cardiologist specialists work with patients. My thoughts are with you. Hope everything works out OK for you.

the real concern for me was that not one cardiologist knew anything about the fda warning, in a nutshell here is what it's about.
certain medtronics azure pacemakers have glass resistors in them, which can crack, once that happens the battery will completely drain in 24 hrs. I even had doctors try to tell me that is was a software problem not a hardware problem. it is for sure a hardware problem that cannot be fixed with software. keep a eye on your pacemaker reports, I get a copy every time i go to the doctor after an interrogation of the device.

Kanaaz, I do apologize that I have waited so long to respond to your kind inquiry about my pm pain. Progress is slow, isn't it? An x-ray shows that I have AC joint arthritis. I have waited 3 weeks tomorrow to hear from a dr who is going to give me some kind of nerve ending tests. Next week I see an orthopedic dr The pain hasn't bothered me recently although I could hardly sit in church about 2 weeks ago because of it. It is definitely related to activity although the pain seems to be directly over my pacemaker site. I just can't figure and why did the pain start at the exact same time I received my pacemaker?

Thank you again for asking. It takes time and I'm going to guess that most of us are short on patience. Oops! I sure am.

I wish you well and agree about patience. God's blessing.
