Pain around pacemaker site

Posted by dorothynoz45 @dorothynoz45, Jun 22, 2019

I am getting very frustrated with this situation. I have had my pacemaker for over 2 years and I still have the same cramping ache at the site that I experienced after the implant. No one takes me seriously. I have been trying to rattle the cardiology office cage for a week and 1/2 now. Several weeks ago it got worse; woke me up at night and in the morning it hurt so bad that twice I couldn't stand straight. It seems to harder to stand up when I get up and start moving. I can't get past the phone nurse. She left a voice mail for me ' that it couldn't possibly be the device because I've had it so long. That it must be something else.' Dr. told me they could re position it but didn't like to for fear of infection. I am posting because after this long of time, although I've been told nothing can be done about it, I don't want this in my life anymore. Has this happened to anyone else?

Hello @1101 and welcome to the Heart Rhythm Condition support group on Mayo Clinic Connect. If I understand correctly, the pacemaker was originally inserted in April of this year and two weeks ago it was repositioned, and the leads were moved. Is that correct?

Is the pain still the same as it was prior to the procedure two weeks ago? What has your doctor suggested to help reduce the pain?

Thank you for the prompt reply. You are correct, the pacemaker was inserted in April. I was diagnosed with bradycardia. I was still having shortness of breath, weakness when walking etc. I then had a heart cath which showed 2 blockages, 1 only 40% and the other 70 to 80%. I was told the larger blockage on the left desending artery was located very close to the "widow maker" and it was best not to disturb it. Then I was ordered a ultrasound on my heart and after my electro physiologist recommended surgery to move the leads .. As far as heart pain, it's much better but the pacemaker ..is causing severe burning stabs when I move a certain way. I haven't talked to my Dr concerning this pain. Yesterday the device nurse removed my bandages and the site looks good. The pain last night was a shock. I do not want to go to ER . sorry this is so long.
Thank you Bonnie (I'm 75 years old, 4'10" tall & I weigh) 110 lbs)

@1101 Hello Bonnie

I do think it would be wise to contact your doctor's office regarding this pain you are experiencing. I would also like to invite @danab to this conversation to see if he has any input.

From what I understand, the pain is a burning type of pain. Is that correct? Please explain that to your doctor's nurse when you call the office.

A little over 2 months ago, I had a pacemaker inserted. I have bad pain at the insertion site.
This pain is at the top of the incision. I cannot have any clothing touch this or it hurts. At night, when I roll onto my back afyer being on either side, the shooting pain wakes me up.
Is it possible that this incision is accidentally attached to a nerve?
Before this surgery. I was a very active 63 year old. Exercising daily.
Any advice would be helpful. My doctor said this is healing but this much pain (constantly) cannot be normal.

I am just over two months from having my pacemaker put in. I woke up one night with a burning sensation by my incision area plus a horrible feeling of my skin feeling tight. My doctor said my incision was still warm and swollen so continued my restrictions. My burning sensation is getting worse, literally wakes me up at night. Can’t get comfortable to fall asleep and to put on a bra, FORGET IT. My doctor thinks it is going to take me longer to heal due to my fibromyalgia. Anyone else have any recommendations, I literally think about the pain and bringing all day! I go see my cardiologist next week.

I have the same issue. I am only a month and 1/2. I am very thin, and you can see the whole pacemaker shape everything. Clothing is hurtful even taking deep breath or moving is hurtful. I have bought several types of bras trying to find one that does not rub on it. I Pray that it will get better over time or less painful. Any suggestions or comments.

Kanaaz, I do apologize that I have waited so long to respond to your kind inquiry about my pm pain. Progress is slow, isn't it? An x-ray shows that I have AC joint arthritis. I have waited 3 weeks tomorrow to hear from a dr who is going to give me some kind of nerve ending tests. Next week I see an orthopedic dr The pain hasn't bothered me recently although I could hardly sit in church about 2 weeks ago because of it. It is definitely related to activity although the pain seems to be directly over my pacemaker site. I just can't figure and why did the pain start at the exact same time I received my pacemaker?

Thank you again for asking. It takes time and I'm going to guess that most of us are short on patience. Oops! I sure am.

I had a pacemaker implanted last month. I was aware of the doctor putting the pacemaker in me. He was pushing very hard on the site. I heard him say he had to try to get most the blood out of the pocket so the pacemaker wouldn’t be floating in there. I was at a teaching hospital so I’m sure my doctor was training others. I am on Eliquis so there was a lot of bleeding. My shoulder was very sore for a week after. Perhaps placing your pacemaker aggravated your arthritis?

I have the same problem.

I have exactly the same, gradually got worse over the years. Had my pacemaker fitted in July 2013. Had two years of mis-beats, which I eventually found myself due to tea and coffee. I’m in year 11 now with the same pacemaker, and the last six months, the aching sensations have been quite bad. My doctor wrote to my cardiologist with urgency. He responded back to him for me to report to my pacemaker clinic, who continually say there’s no problem with the pacemaker. Round and round we go again. Really can’t understand why someone can’t take ownership with this. My pacemaker was fitted due to low pulse, 28 bpm, now it’s 60 bpm.
No problem with the pacemaker, it’s definitely given more oxygen into my lungs. I’m 67 now and cycle 30 miles most days, so if anyone is about to have one, I would highly recommend it. That’s all I seek is self assurance that I’m not going to keel over.
