Oral lichen Planus: What home remedies or medications help you?

Posted by lovebug61 @lovebug61, Apr 4, 2019

Anyone in the group suffer from Oral Lichen Planus. I am at my wits end with all these erosive sores in my mouth. I've had two biopsies , one in the inside cheek and one under the side of my tongue. The spot under the tongue is extremely sore to touch and has been for over a year. It scares me because the soreness never goes away, sometimes it isn't as sore but nothing helps. Any home remedies for this dreadful condition?

Hi @chari9 I found the comments Laurie is referring to. She’d replied to @fdixon63 @bustrbrwn22 regarding LP. They are in this group.

Hello @chari9 you must be quite miserable with both LP and shingles. The combination must be so difficult! LP is an autoimmune disease but the shingles virus is an opportunistic virus that takes advantage of a lowered immune system. Read through this discussion and see what others have done. I’m sure that members @bustrbrwn22 and @artist01 and @microgirl will step up to help you

Other than the Biotene products, are you being treated for LP?

None of my doctors seem to be concerned about the LP. They are blaming everything on Shingles.

@chari9. I would disagree. LP is no joke. Started on my skin, then my mouth, next my eyes. Started on high taper prednisone to get my mouth under control which I believe caused pre-diabetes condition. I have started and briefly stopped hydroxychloroquine because the inflammations never stop but it caused great ringing in my ears and vertigo. My dr said to start again in a couple days to see if I tolerate better. Be vigilant of any mucous membranes and get a treatment plan ASAP before it worsens. Clobetasol worked for a while in my mouth and skin but the lesions became ulcers and more aggressive treatment is needed. You need to find a dermatologist that takes LP seriously. Just my opinion.

I have had Lichen Planus for over 2 years on my gums with extreme bleeding. A few months ago I developed a sore on the side of my tongue. Hurt to eat talk..ect. My sister who is an RN suggested I take Valtrex. After taking 2 tablets a day for 4 days all Lichen Planus vanished. This leads me to believe it is viral. 2 months later and very little symptoms of LP.

Is Valtrex on prescription, or over the counter? I think some OTCs in the States are on prescription in Canada, and some OTCs in Canada are only available on prescription. Are you in the States?

Oh my gosh thank you! I thought that I was the only one with this…it took an oral surgeon to diagnose mine. He prescribed a cortisol cream which I used in my mouth despite the warnings on the package. It worked so I don’t know…

Hello @microgirl, Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I read a post earlier in this discussion where @orangealert mentioned that mouthwashes and toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can often make the symptoms worse. I don't have oral lichen planus but used to have a lot of canker sores frequently and switched to a toothpaste that does not contains SLS and it has helped me. @artist01 @rashida and other member may also have suggestions.

You mentioned the appointment with the specialist not going very well. Have you thought about a second opinion at a major teaching hospital or health facility like Mayo Clinic?

Hello, @microgirl

I have had oral lichen planus for years. I undertook an exhaustive search for a toothpaste that did not hurt, and finally found one. I use Kids Crest, specifically the Sparkle Fun flavor. It comes in a 4.6 oz. tube. Hopefully you can calmly exhale after brushing!
