HypoThyroid and depression

Posted by pianohands123 @pianohands123, May 13, 2020

Hello, I have hypothyroidism and have been on medication for 15 years. I have a very healthy life style but have a full time job and 2 immediate family members that are living with mental illness. In the past years, I have noticed my energy levels reduced, and bouts of anxiety and depression that are very familiar to symptoms that lead to my diagnosis. I have tried antidepressants in the past, bit want to know if TMS would be an option for me instead of oral medicine. I have insurance and access locally to this treatment.

I want to ask everyone a very hard question. If your spouse is uncooperative, selfish, non loving, and mentally abusive, and drinks every two hours, even in the night, why does the doctor give you medication so you can stand the pain? I told my doctor that my husband had problems and he should give him the pills. He replied that he neve thought of it that way. Yes, I should have left after a few years of his controlling behavior, but I refused to give up taking care of my grandchildren before and after school while their mothers went to work. I knew that if I left he would find me and physically drag me back home.
So I stayed until his health went bad and he died. I took Xanax to sleep for a while but went off the drug before he died because I knew my bad journey would soon be over. I have no need of medications now in my contented life. I have learned a lot in 84 years. I should write it down, I think. Dorisena

@dorisena I am so sorry for you. There are AA meetings for the spouses and others. I'm worried about you. Have you seen a counselor? You may have to get out of this bad situation. Mental abusive is as bad as physical. I hope you find some help. Please take care of yourself and maybe separate from your husband for awhile.

I am on levothyroxine, and anxiety medication. Have had my regular check-up and am in the normal range. I am considering making changes in my career, as stress is a factor. With COVID 19, I pause to make any employment decision, I'm still working and so is my husband. The culture shift that seems to be happening,, creates a level of anxiety of its own. It is uncertain times to be sure. I have seen a therapist, and she doesn't feel my bouts of depression are clinical, more circumstance related. I have decided not to disengage with my family members, because, well, I am all they have, and they won't be on this earth forever. So, maybe I am my own worst enemy. Just trying to cope in these uncertain times. Thank you all for chimming in and offering support. Blessings and good thoughts from me.

@pianohands123 I think many of us are anxious at this time. I am sure your therapist is correct, that your depression is situational. It sounds as if you do have a handle on it though, and that's about all any of us can do. From what I know, from friends and family, we are all having good days and bad days.

Lillypaws, I am sorry I misled you. I have written about my past, and have been free and widowed for 14 years. My problem is buried in the local cemetery two miles north. I did the alcohol classes, I saw three psychiatrists and a psychologist, I spent time away as much as I could, I studied in college, and I prayed much. I learned about mental illness, and now am living a wonderful life, reaching out to others so they can learn to make changes for themselves. Do not feel sorry, as I am a winner at life. Dorisena

I'm not sure if I can ask this question in this group or not. I'm diabetic and I have stress. My forehead and eyebrows get intense itching. Nobody seems to know why. It's not all the time and sometimes worse than others. I just had a short bout of itching a few minutes ago, now its gone. Other times it lasts for a very long time.

Just a comment—consult a doctor. I had shingles a #of years ago and still get itching on that side on my scalp and forehead. It is intermittent but probably caused by stress. I too am diabetic. The dermatologist has ignored the complaint!

Well, I've never had shingles, or chicken pox. You mention stress, and I'm wondering about that. I've seen a dermatologist, and my regular doctor, both of them brush it off. This itching can be very irritating when you are sitting in church Sunday morning...LOL

I have fought ecxema all my life, since birth, but not much anymore since I have learned how to keep it gone. They still don't know what causes it and some creams don't help when the dermatologist recommends them. My palms itch but I see nothing. My face itches at times but I have always had dry skin.
I don't know if it has anything to do with diabetes because I had it at birth. Diet is associated with rashes in some cases. Look there. The last cream I had prescribed came from a new doctor who looked into the matter because it was my doctor's day off. The cream helped some. I try to go to the doctor on my doctor's day off now. I can't get an appointment anyway, so I avoid them. Read on the web. Sometimes the nutrition advice helps. Sometimes I use only plain olive oil on my skin. It made Cleopatra have better skin, I read. Avoid stress.
Actually, quit stress. I remember closing down my kitchen, leaving a note and going to my other little farm house overnight. I would get a phone call asking if I was coming home to cook dinner, and I replied "I don't know." That usually changed the attitude for a while and I had better cooperation. I finally learned to put my foot down in middle age and got some relief from the stress. Now I have none at all as a widow but it is still a lot of work. Dorisena
