Farm field with bales of hay, meet member @jowilliams1

TERESA: What brought you to Mayo Clinic Connect?

@jowilliams1: In June, 2024 at the age of 54, I was diagnosed with high-grade muscle-invasive bladder cancer. I was told that same day my bladder would have to be removed. I had a lot of choices to make on my urinary diversion options and wanted to make an educated decision. I went into a deep dive trying to learn all that I could about bladder cancer. I started reading information connected to Mayo Clinic and in the process found Mayo Clinic Connect.

TERESA: What motivates you to take part in Mayo Clinic Connect?

@jowilliams1: Mayo Clinic Connect is where I’m able to learn about the experiences of others while also being able to share my own story. It interests me to read about the differences in treatment plans among community members. I’m doing well and I would like to think that I can offer some optimism and hope to someone that may be struggling or anxious.

TERESA: What about Mayo Clinic Connect makes you feel comfortable to share and to be open with the community?

@jowilliams1: I think it is normal for those of us who have gone through cancer to feel a connection with one another. Everyone’s story is different, but most of us are doing the best we can to stay hopeful. Community members know what it is like to have a day when you feel physically or emotionally defeated. It’s a safe place to be allowed to hold space for those emotions.

TERESA: What support groups do you participate in?

@jowilliams1: I’m in the Bladder Cancer Support Group

TERESA: Tell us about a meaningful moment you've experienced on Mayo Clinic Connect.

@jowilliams1: It may sound silly, but even the little “helpful” buttons that I sometimes receive in response to a message I’ve posted make me feel good . If my words are helpful in even the smallest way to someone else, I’m glad.

TERESA: What surprised you the most about Mayo Clinic Connect?

@jowilliams1: I was surprised at the encouragement that so many community members share amongst each other. There is a true sense of caring.

TERESA: What energizes you, or how do you find balance in your life?

@jowilliams1: I work full time and my employer has been very supportive of my cancer journey and the balance between work, health, friends and family that the last couple of years has required. I feel very blessed in so many ways and that energizes me.

TERESA: Tell us about your favorite pastime or activity.

@jowilliams1: I love spending time with my family and friends, especially my two sons (ages 24 and 26). I also enjoy traveling, baking new recipes to share and reading non-fiction.

TERESA: What do you love about where you live or vacation?

@jowilliams1: I love an open field.  I grew up on a farm, so any untouched land reminds me of my faith and brings me a sense of calm.

TERESA: Do you have a favorite quote, life motto or personal mantra?

@jowilliams1: A healthy man wants a thousand things; a sick man only wants one. Confucious

TERESA: What do you appreciate the most in your friends?

@jowilliams1: My friends have my back. I know that if I need something and reach out, they will be there. That means the world to me.

TERESA: If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you?

@jowilliams1: Julia Roberts (of course! LOL)
