HypoThyroid and depression

Posted by pianohands123 @pianohands123, May 13, 2020

Hello, I have hypothyroidism and have been on medication for 15 years. I have a very healthy life style but have a full time job and 2 immediate family members that are living with mental illness. In the past years, I have noticed my energy levels reduced, and bouts of anxiety and depression that are very familiar to symptoms that lead to my diagnosis. I have tried antidepressants in the past, bit want to know if TMS would be an option for me instead of oral medicine. I have insurance and access locally to this treatment.

@mummy43

Thanks JK. I will check it out. I need a good moisture cream, I'm almost out and I'm anxious to try something new. Hope it's effective on me too. My feet, especially my heels are like horse hooves....lol Marie

@mummy43 This, of course, was a facial cream. I think there are less expensive creams that can be purchased in drug stores that would be good for other body parts like your heels. I really need a good, strong cream myself for my shoulders. For some reason, my skin there gets so dry that I tend to scratch it and I have to be careful or I will cause it to bleed a bit. I did use one last year that I think I will get again. It was a drug store cream and said for eczema. Now if I could only remember the brand name. If I do I will let you know.

I use products with shea butter in them, especially for my feet. I use Clinique products, which were on sale recently, but not often. I put socks on after the cream at bedtime and let it soak in overnight. No hard, dry soles at all. I use olive oil on my hands and arms sometimes and it is good. I don't worry about being the cheapest product because I only have me to care for, so I am a priority now after being a sacrificing wife for 50 years. Dorisena

@contentandwell, I use Aveeno Stress Relief or Aveeno Oatmeal Colloidal (I think) lotion for my sensitive and dry skin. My friend saw it and said her son's doctor recommended it for his eczema. It must work for him as I didn't know he had eczema.

@mummy43, My friend has heels that are so dry they develop deep cracks that bleed eventually. Of course she hates wearing shoes and wears only flip flops or goes barefooted. She can't afford pedicures, which wouldn't help now anyway due to isolating. Her doctor told her to use super glue. Apparently it closes the cracks and allows them to heal a little. It also prevents infections.

My heels used to be like that when I was younger, but no more. I also used a battery powered pumice file at first when the problem was worse. Now I use a heel file, similar to a nail file but much larger and supported by strong plastic frame. It has a rough side and a fine side. I now use it on a regular basis to keep the skin from getting hard. Anytime I notice my heels getting a little scratchy with dry skin sticking up and catching on my sheets, I get out my trusty file. Of course, I also use body cream or lotion daily after my shower. Aveeno works best for me.

@dorisena I too no longer worry about what I spend to get better quality. My skin and my feet are my priorities, I have to have comfortable shoes.

When I married my husband I worked for five years to help put his daughter and son through college before we started a family - never so much as a thank you from either of them. Then when my son and daughter went to college I resumed working and literally every cent I earned went to tuition. My son and daughter are very appreciative, they know we sacrificed for them.

We can afford those little extras now so I do indulge myself.

This is the cream that I liked last year. I guess I stopped using it in warmer weather, my skin of course is less dry then without the heat on in the house, but I found the old tube. I think I will use some tonight.

@gailb Aveeno is always great too. I love their products.

It takes so much time and effort to go through all the steps in the morning to prepare myself for the day, but I continue to discipline my efforts to make sure I use all the creams, special socks, hair treatments, teeth care, you name it and I must do it, plus clean up the bathroom before I turn out the lights. I don't forget to unplug the hearing aids and cell phone, gather some tissues, and the dental floss for use after everything I eat. I check my nails for snags and breaks. I do some stretches along the way. I think I am staying ahead of more skin problems as I age, and I see the dermatologist to check for basal cell carcinoma every six months or so. It isn't just the diabetes or thyroid these days to manage. Early diagnosis is key to staying alive, and I have survived breast cancer and thyroid cancer, and have been warned I could face more in the future, due to DNA change. My late husband would not see a doctor, and then laughed about his diabetes, out of ignorance of the disease. He died of metastatic cancer of the spine at age 71. I had to watch in silence as he suffered and was treated with maximum amount of radiation to try to alleviate some pain. It was a good lesson to me and I want everyone to know that we don't have to suffer like that if we take better care of ourselves and follow healthy guidelines. Dorisena

What has helped my depression, which is gone from my life now, is eating lots of fresh vegetables, but I noticed years ago if I didn't eat many vegetables, I would be cranky. I have pretty much walked away from toxic people and situations and people who think conformity is good for everyone. Not for me! I am free to do projects that make me happy, and right now it is the garden since I am not going to church right now and doing any music there. Working hard makes me feel better, but I am limited to a couple of hours, with sitting down often.
I am surprised that this isolation life is not making me depressed because I can communicate on the computer, so you are a benefit to my life, and I appreciated the opportunity to share. I don't take pills for depression and do my own therapy as I reason out issues logically. I really do love people who are nice and honest with me and that means a lot. I fell very blessed because I have no debt or worries how to live so long as I can still grow some food. That is my life on the farm, which never made me rich, however.
