~ Depressed and scared, not making it financially ~

Posted by Barb @amberpep, Feb 26, 2019

I'm 74 years old and moved 3 years ago from MD to VA. My girls had hounded me to come down for several years so I finally did it. I sold my condo (at a loss), and a job with a dentist. Well, here I am, and financially I'm just not making it. That amount I earned from the dentist covered me with just a little left over. Now, more than often, I don't have enough. I eeked out just enough for my rent this month, and now there's not even enough for a quart of milk. I get S.S. and what I get goes right out for my rent (usually there's enough), and my son sends me money each month. I'm sickened, depressed, and scared. I live in low income housing, and have a budget that practically squeaks. I'm thinking of starting to sell some of my furniture.
I so wish I'd have stayed in MD, for so many reasons, this being one of them. I have applied for oodles of jobs (they're all on line now), and legally they're not supposed to ask you how old you are (although many do), but they all ask when you graduated from either high school or college .... well, it doesn't take rocket science to figure out how old a person is. I'm so depressed about this, and .so upset that my stomach.constantly churns.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Hi Smile, You just moved to a new life away from Negativity. Now, Positivity. Are there any things you want to add to your new Condo.? If there are things you would like to decorate, it can been done inexpensively that you would hang up that shows the things you like or something that comforts you. Book shelves. The I feel depressed I add a little more of me to my home. The more you do for you the more you put a distance to the life you left. Just an idea, we care.

I unfortunately don’t own this condo so I have to watch what I do and ask for pro-mission to do things. I would like to hang a lilac or lavender curtain in my bedroom. The landlady also likes purple, she has dark purple on one wall in the living room.

@smilie Congratulations for making the move, and I sincerely hope that you will begin to feel better. Now you can focus on yourself, and hopefully not feel threatened. As you probably know, depression may take a while to build up, and certainly doesn't disappear immediately! When you moved, were there friends that remain at the old location? If so, will you keep in contact with them?

Smile, that sounds like a good idea lilac, lavender curtains in your bedroom light or dark which ever you prefer. I find that color soothing especially for a bedroom. I understand about ownership. Plus about your landlady and the color! May I suggest, only because I do this, thinking of projects you may like to do. Keeping your mind busy with the things you enjoy. When I have a lot of pain I go on the computer, research, Mayo Connect and more if I can physically. Your already starting to the road of new beginnings from what I read. Now I'm smiling.

I don’t have many friends. Those two people I wrote about are coming here October 6th and I’m very nervous and afraid of that!!!! They are going to be here for one month and I plan not to see either of them!!!! I can’t because of my mental health!!!! I suffered for too many years and I have worked hard and long to start feeling better!!!! I won’t let anyone get in my way of feeling better!!!!

@smilie Be strong. You shouldn't have to see them if you don't want to! Keep up the positive self-talk that we see you doing, and working on getting your life back to the way you want it to be.

I know how you feel...I am83 and moved 4 yrs.ago, forced by divorce, to a house in foreclosure and love on SS...no savings, etc. Call your Area Agency on aging....you can get food stamp card, and other help. Or call your local senior center for help, also any Catholic church will give you gift card for food, groceries and pay bills you have no money for......St Vincent DePaul society . I may have to move to low income place too and guess what!! I was married to a dentist!! And my teeth need so much help but cannot afford. I love day to day with illness. And pray!!! God Bless you.

I was talking to the mental health nurse and we sat down making a list of things that I would like to try and she was very impressed because she doesn’t know anyone, herself included, that has so many interests.
