Living Donor: It's a huge responsibility

Posted by fbgibbons672 @fbgibbons672, Sep 11, 2017

I am a match for my sister's kidney transplant and will be heading to Mayo next month for evaluation. My sister has told everyone she knows about me, even refers to me as her "kidney mama". I understand she is excited and I am as well, but now I wonder how I will feel if I don't "pass" and she has to continue her waiting and dialysis. Its a huge responsibility and a huge honor to be able to do this, but.....

@fauneconner, I want to drop in and say '"Hi". I am thinking of you and your husband. I pray that he is doing okay, And I pray that you are getting through the testing process in comfortable manner.

@fbgibbons672, I want you to know that I am thinking about you and your sister. I hope that both of you are doing okay. I also hope that you have gained some support by reading what others are saying as they are going through their own unique journey with kidney donation for a loved one.

Do you have any questions for us? If you are comfortable doing so, do you have any information that you would like to share with any of our other donor patients?
Hugs,
Rosemary

Hi, Rosemary. Thanks for asking and for your prayers. We are hanging in right now. I complete what I hope is the last of my testing this coming Monday. I am having a chest CT and a pulmonary function test, plus some more blood work I think. Then hopefully I will know if I qualify as a donor or not. My husband's GFR has been relatively stable so that buys us time to get everything lined up.

@uchimaobi, Welcome. We are happy that you have joined our discussion about Living Kidney Donation. Your opening statement is beautiful! If you have read the other entries, I think you have already met some others who are looking into the possibility.

@uchimaobi, I would like to ask you a couple questions so we can better carry on a conversation. Is that all right?
Are you already a donor, or are you looking for a way to get started on the process?

What are some questions that you would like to ask?

@fauneconner, I am so happy that your husband's condition is relatively stable. That also makes it easier (is that possible?) for you during this already stressful situation.
I hope that your tests provide the answers that you desire. Your choice of words, "Hanging in" are a perfect description. I needed both a liver and a kidney, and I clearly understand the "hanging in" state of mind.
Is the transplant center doing the tests? Did you get any indication of how long until you will know anything about qualifying?

@uchimaobi, Did you receive any contact information when you left Mayo last month? I would suggest that you give them a call about this problem. That is what I would do.
Do you have a family member, or a trusted friend nearby who might assist you with this?
Let me know what you find out.

I am completing what I hope is the last of the testing here Monday. They will then send the results to Mayo. It was just easier to have these follow up tests done locally than travel back to Rochester. I don't know for sure when I will have an answer but I am sure my living donor nurse will let me know when the committee meets and goes over my file. Our Bible Study Fellowship lesson this weekj was entitled "Cope with Hope" and that is what I am doing.
