Managing mental gymnastics

Posted by Gratia @gratia, 1 day ago

Do you ever feel you may be risking your own wellbeing and mental health doing the mental gymnastics it requires to navigate caregiving for a loved one with dementia?
I hope you don’t feel the way I do.

I do sometimes feel that way, especially when he is resisting me. I fight depression every day, fortunately I am part of a wonderful caregivers group provided by our local VA. It offers everything from support groups, to arts and craft classes online and in person. I know this might not be available for everyone but please try and find something that can give a least a little insight and relief for you, and of course you can reach out to us anytime even if you just need a hug 🤗

Yes! Absolutely feel that way, probably once a day. I completely get it, and I agree that you need some kind of relief for yourself and to take care of yourself however you can. Distraction, visit friends, Etc if you can. Describing it as mental gymnastics is an excellent visual. I am a psychiatric nurse and I'm supposed to know how to handle things like this but forget it! Doesn't matter who I am because it's happening in my home everyday. Thank you for your comments, Diane

Well, have you read the caregiver statistics? It does decrease our life span and it is definitely taking its toll. Doesn't seem to be much we can do about that, except try and get or hire help to decrease our loads for a bit. It's depressing for sure. 🫂

It’s hard, when living away back from everything. Not so many miles away, but in a sort of isolation. He doesn’t feel like getting out. I won’t leave him, except for absolutely necessary reasons. How can I find/do anything for myself ?

Before I become a caregiver I use to help out my neighbor, I would just go sit with her husband for a couple of hours for her to get out, do you have a family member or friend that would help? Also try some online support groups such as Family caregiver alliance, there are also a lot of online classes for relaxation such as art, drawing, yoga they could give you some relief. I hope this helps 🤗

@dederickve yes I agree the isolation is one of the hardest things. But it does help to connect with community online. Just to feel less alone 🤗❤️

@akela09 I appreciate that you cared enough that you responded to my post.
No. No family member would do it, give some time for me to get out and enjoy some time somewhere, else. They are busy doing their own thing. I doubt they would even think that I might like to . But, when I was in the hospital, myself, they came and took care of things, so I know I can count on that.
