Guilty Pleasures
Psalm 32:7 says: “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” Was the author of this passage addressing dementia caregiver, too? I would like to think so: Surely, the presence of "the Lord" or some other higher power is working through this incredible support group.
Many of us start our mornings by checking new postings in this forum. Sometimes, George will call me a dozen times before I get a chance to scroll through the headings--or to finish composing a post.
Consequently, I feel guilty about not giving him my undivided attention. So when he calls and asks what I'm doing, I tell him that I am looking at my "Mayo porn"--one of my guilty pleasures ("guilty" because I'm enjoying myself without his participation and because I should be more attentive to him--or be doing chores, like beginning the process of döstädning).
The other guilty pleasure is my glass or two of wine every evening, and occasionally, a martini. My "happy" hour--but it's without George because he can't mix alcohol with his meds.
For me, a guilty pleasure is a get-out-of-jail-free card. It's a notch above self-care, because indulgence can create a sense of fun--real or imagined.
You don't have to share your guilty pleasures, if you wish to keep them private.

The Prayer: I have had it for years. Not one page, a whole pad.
@shmerdloff I love it....."a whole pad" - where do I get that?
Best, Karla
@kjc48
Probably at a garage sale. I have not used the pad. It stayed intact for 20 years.
I don't know what "the pad" is. Is it a book of poems, or just that one poem, elaborated? I hate to ask stupid questions, but I'm now intrigued. I'll google and see what I see.
Thanks for responding.
Best Karla
@kjc48
Oh! It's just a colored page with poem on it and flowers. If you scribble on it, you tear off the page, and there is another one, different color. Different flowers, but same poem and so on
I am not a thrower outer , so I nevet scribbled on it or tore off the pages. I'll see if I can take a picture of it.
I didn't know why I saved it intact all these years. Now I do😄

2 Reactions@kjc48 Please don't feel guilty. You did the best you could. Some people feel guilty for hating being a caregiver, others for not doing enough. Guilt and grief are closely related in our brains. Don't beat yourself up, but rather pat yourself on the back and try to accept the waves of grief that occur.

5 Reactions@georgescraftjr you have said what many of us feel. I’m not sure when I discovered this wonderful group of folks on the same path, but tho I don’t post often, please know how very thankful I am for all of you-I look for new posts every morning and most evenings. Thank you to all, for your caring, and blessings and strength to you all for this journey none of us saw coming.

3 Reactions@kjc48 Dear Karla, you have helped me and others so many times, might I say I’m glad you are coming to terms with the guilt you carried for so many years….when we are working and trying to do well and feel secure in our careers, whether they be outside or inside the home, - in those years, it can feel all-consuming. your mom knew how much you loved her and understood. I flew to help my sister in Arizona, not knowing how seriously ill she was (she was not a fan of going to the doctor) a few short weeks after my husband’s knee replacement. I was torn about where I should be…sadly, my sister was so ill that she died while I was there. I have those guilty tinges, but I also know she and I loved each other, and with my husband hobbling about, wel…I feel I did the best I could have, with the information I had at the time.
At any rate, you have plenty to think about…and as you said, now making all the important decisions “solo” is not easy. Give yourself a hug, and please always continue posting here. Best wishes-and take good care!
