LPR, (Silent Reflux) Hiatal Hernia, BE, MAC Infection

Posted by blm1007blm1007 @blm1007blm1007, May 28 10:49am

Anyone out there with all l have listed to deal with?
I have not been diagnosed with LPR or specifically Acid Reflux (tested for this, no findings) but now truly believe I do have the symptoms of LPR/Silent Reflux.
The LPR possible symptoms are worse at night. Burning sensation in the mouth/tongue.
Has anyone been diagnosed with LPR/Hiatal Hernia along with BE and MAC?
If so, how much clearing of phlegm/mucus are you having to do during the day ....and .....upon those wake up times between the short hours of sleep.... from one wake up period to another.....and once one is able to fall back to sleep.
I wake up to walk down the hall to do as my bladder has asked me to do and then I have to clear my trachea/throat/or esophagus of what is annoying me and keeping me from easily going back to sleep.
Any similar stories?

I agree with the issue about sliding down as well when using the wedge pillow. I did find a small pillow to go under you knees which helps a lot in particular if you are a back sleeper. I at least start out that way so hope to get some benefit from that. The pillow is essentially a lumbar roll type but sliced in half horizontally so round on top, flat on the flip side so it stays put fairly well. No silent reflex found but motility issues present so told to eat slowly and sip water.

@rmoore901 Try placing one or two pillows vertically on your wedge pillow, depending on how elevated you would like your torso to be. One should be enough. You will not slide down.

@formergardener Interesting vertically will help. Will do that tonight on the wedge pillow.
Thanks

@formergardener I liked it better....but must have a few more days trying it out to fully understand if I am sliding etc. I will let you know.
Thanks,

I position myself with my head well towards the top of the pillow on the wedge. It may depend on the type of pillow you are using. Some people use two pillows. The pillow extends from my head to the tops of my hips. If you slide, it will be minimal.

Barbra,

I'm so sorry you are having these multiple issues that you are dealing with. I have GERD ( and a hernia), NTM, COPD & Bronchiectasis, and 3 other autoimmune issues, and most recently diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy. I have always been a left side sleeper, but was finding it more difficult with my multiple lung issues, causing coughing and needing to clear my lungs of mucus. My husband and I made the expensive decision to purchase an adjustable electric King-size mattress. A friend who has an adjustable electric split King-size strongly advised me not to get the split mattress because changing the sheets is so difficult. Unfortunately, my husband does not like sleeping sitting almost straight up, so he slides down with his feet hanging off the bed. I now sleep almost straight up with a pillow I purchased from Amazon that fits my neck nicely. I am now a back sleeper, but I seldom have coughing issues at night, or the burning chest issues from the GERD, and NO sliding down during sleep. I found that, even when stacking pillows, I would still slide down while sleeping. I've read it is not good for anyone to sleep flat on their backs. I try to never eat, at least, 3 hours before bedtime, which also helps with the GERD and/or silent reflux.

I realize buying an adjustable electric mattress is not a realistic, feasible, or affordable option, but it has made a huge difference in my life and sleeping. As a person who has fought insomnia for decades, I knew I had to do something drastic to get some much needed rest.

I wish you the best of luck in finding a solution to your issues.

Take care, stay safe, and good luck.

@ccdb Cathie, thank you for your time in responding.
I almost would rather sleep straight up.
I have been wanting to purchase a neck pillow and will do that first and see how that helps with just using the wedge and a pillow vertically on the wedge....with the neck pillow.
I have looked at the adjustable beds and will probably give more thought to it also since reading the posts and knowing that it does help especially with COPD. Mother was very pleased after we brought in the adjustable bed due to her emphysema.

There is a reflux control pillow by MedCline Relief System with hole for an arm. It was suggested to me by a pulmonologist. Well it’s $350 which I purchased, yes another expense. And well it does not work for me, I am short and my arms are short and I cannot find a comfortable position with my arm in that hole which would prevent from sliding down. So I sleep on it as on a wedge and I slide down during the night. But I think if you are taller that me- 5 feet- it could actually work. Unfortunately it’s not a returnable item.

Hi: I have been using the MedCline wedge and body pillows for eight years. You have to really get used to them but they have achieved keeping my Barrett’s from progressing (I have silent GERD and Bronchiectasis). Keep trying! The results will show up!

@andiesposito Hi Andi
That is encouraging "keeping my Barrett's from progressing."
As far as I know Barrets hasn't started for me,. However I am concerned that I will be damaging my esophagus. I need to be tested again. I have read much about Barrett's but so far I don't feel I have the symptoms. The burning of the tongue that I often wake up with has me feeling I have Acid Reflux/LPR...and especially happens at night while sleeping.
What were/are your symptoms that you associate with the Barrett's.???
Also, you mentioned "MedCline wedge and body pillows you have to really get used to them."
Are you saying you use more than the wedge MedCline in terms of pillows???
I looked up MedCline and not sure if you ordered one specifically being identified for Acid Reflux????
Glad you responded to lilianna and I.

@andiesposito I am happy for you that it works. I wonder where you position your head? Do you sleep with the snake pillow or without it? How do you manage not sliding down if you sleep without the “snake”? Thank you. I struggle every night, my left arm hurts, I constantly wake up and don’t know what to do with the left arm. Please advise
