LPR, (Silent Reflux) Hiatal Hernia, BE, MAC Infection

Posted by blm1007blm1007 @blm1007blm1007, May 28 10:49am

Anyone out there with all l have listed to deal with?
I have not been diagnosed with LPR or specifically Acid Reflux (tested for this, no findings) but now truly believe I do have the symptoms of LPR/Silent Reflux.
The LPR possible symptoms are worse at night. Burning sensation in the mouth/tongue.
Has anyone been diagnosed with LPR/Hiatal Hernia along with BE and MAC?
If so, how much clearing of phlegm/mucus are you having to do during the day ....and .....upon those wake up times between the short hours of sleep.... from one wake up period to another.....and once one is able to fall back to sleep.
I wake up to walk down the hall to do as my bladder has asked me to do and then I have to clear my trachea/throat/or esophagus of what is annoying me and keeping me from easily going back to sleep.
Any similar stories?

I too dealing with silent acid reflux, and BE/MAC i have to eat every 2 /3 hour if I get hungry I will start coughing clear mucus will come up then it will chang color ,so I try not to get to this point . Night time is the worse and if I dont burp I will cough to the point of vomit. It's a nightmare. I take meds for the reflux but its not enough . I feel for you, you have to learn what you can or can't eat .

@petry Glad you found my question.
I take it you are sleeping on your left side on a wedge pillow. I do, however no matter how hard I try I very often, if not all the time, find myself in a lower position on the pillow and sometimes on my back. Of course the worst thing is on my back and low in the bed.
I have been wracking my brain to figure out how to help position myself not to turn over or slide down. All I can think of is to tie myself to something and that's not doable for various, obvious reasons.
Yes a nightmare in terms of the clearing and not getting a straight 7 or 8 hours sleep....uninterrupted sleep. Age apparently, for many of us, is a factor with sleep problems due to the changes longevity does to the body. Some one said in another post that the full moon can come into play regarding a good night's sleep. I think that is a possibility and can add to all the other factors. I did read, after seeing that post, on line about the moon being a factor and possibly affecting sleep.

So sorry about "cough to the point of vomit". That I haven't experienced....as yet.

Between morning exercise, nebulizing, air way clearance/huff coughing, prepping for breakfast, eating and eating slow....the morning is practically shot and then I have to get ready for lunch with all one does for putting a meal together. I have my main meal at lunch. Now if I spread the meals out so not to eat one large meal and have many small meals I might just call it a day that could be no more than health requirement routines, food prep and food intake and clean up.

I have given thought to taking medications for LPR/silent reflux, for at night/sleeping. That is when I truly can say "I think this is an LPR/Acid problem." However, I will continue to avoid the med's for now due to what I have read.
I am going to try to pay attention to what I have eaten during the day in relationship to it being a possible problem contributing to the burning tongue at night. I did suck on some cloves when I woke up last night and before I tried going back to sleep. Low and behold the burning sensation greatly subsided. Sure have to be careful with the cloves....don't want to swallow them. I will be making clove tea.

Thanks for your reply....I'm here if you have anything now or later to add to our discussion.

I put the wedge under my mattress and even out other side with a couple pillows.
No sliding.

There is a reflux control pillow by MedCline Relief System with hole for an arm. It was suggested to me by a pulmonologist. Well it’s $350 which I purchased, yes another expense. And well it does not work for me, I am short and my arms are short and I cannot find a comfortable position with my arm in that hole which would prevent from sliding down. So I sleep on it as on a wedge and I slide down during the night. But I think if you are taller that me- 5 feet- it could actually work. Unfortunately it’s not a returnable item.

I agree with the issue about sliding down as well when using the wedge pillow. I did find a small pillow to go under you knees which helps a lot in particular if you are a back sleeper. I at least start out that way so hope to get some benefit from that. The pillow is essentially a lumbar roll type but sliced in half horizontally so round on top, flat on the flip side so it stays put fairly well. No silent reflex found but motility issues present so told to eat slowly and sip water.

I had a Colonoscapy 1.5 year ago . I woke up with a violent cough, after much meds to stop this they send me home, 3 day later I got pneumonia. During the procedure I aspirated stomach fluids. I wish my doctor would have told me this could happen as he told me after , that is one of the effects of a Colonoscapy. My health and stomach has never been the same .
It pays to do research i foud to maintain a balance of alkaline and acidic food help with reflux. I cut out all tomato sauce, cheese, chocolate, peppermint, and spicy food , it is not the perfect solution but it helps . The pain i had in my stomach and lower esophagus was what determined me to take the meds as reflux can permanently cause damage . Apples have pectin which help neutralize the acid, so I eat a half peeled apple in the evening before bed . I do lye first on my left side but my hipe hurt to much to sleep all night on it and can't sleep on my back. I hope you can glean some from this conversation. I wish you the best with your trials

@petry Yes, Thank you. I do know about what we should avoid,.
I like the idea of the apple a few hours before bed.
I do eat apples a good few times a week in the morning. I cut up the peeled apples to the shape of half moons and put a nut butter on them and then pumpkin seeds, flaxseed meal, sunflower seeds, hemp hearts on the slices I also put peeled cut up apples in my cooked oatmeal or steel oats.
That was not a pleasant experience you went through after the colonoscopy. I do know things can happen with just about any test....it certainly is disturbing mentally and emotionally, also, when it happens.
Up until this year, for a good few years before, I could not sit a certain way due tail bone pain. I have been doing leg exercises in bed each morning, simple ones, and walking fifteen minutes in the house. The layout of my house on the hardwood floors enables me to do this walking in the house. I walk in the house to avoid cold/hot weather and inclement weather etc. etc. Since doing that for a couple of years I no longer experience that pain associated with the tail bone.

@blm1007blm1007 I had that problem with sliding down in the bed and subsequently got an adjustable bed. It is a lifesaver…best money I could spend. No more sliding down and came in handy for positions due to surgery.
Has really helped LPR and GERD related symptoms.

Sadly, yes and more. Large hiatal hernia, GERD, BE, originally Absessus possibly gone, pseudomonas active, afib, fibromyalgia, 5 compression fractures resulting 4 in loss of height and “organ crowding”. My stomach has no where to go except up and out. My lungs showed some atelectasis in lower lobes in last CT from crowding. Newest event coughing up large amount of blood two weeks ago. Enough to send this retired nurse to the ER. Xray, CT’s and ENT look down throat didn’t find anything. Pulmonologist leaning towards hypertonic saline and coughing weakened a blood vessel that ruptured. Stopped Eliquis and nebulizing for now.
Now to you. Adjustable bed!! I still slide some, but I use a sturdy cardboard box wrapped in a pillow case at the foot of the bed. I use it to push myself back up in the bed. No more of the silky slippery sheets or sleepwear. I really want to Velcro my back to the bed. I can only sleep on my back, Consider trying Manuka honey for reflux. It has to be the really good stuff. I take a generous teaspoon at bedtime. It has antibiotic properties also. I’ve been through 10 years of proton pump inhibitors (ruined my bones) and just about every other reflux treatment over too many years. I hope you find some answers.

@bamaqueen As soon as I read "retired nurse" I wondered if you worked in a hospital setting or doctors office etc.. My thoughts went to often patients might have given you what they had, illnesses. If so, that certainly didn't/couldn't help you through the years with the sum of it all in, some way , adding to your health.

For ten years, just about, I slept flat on my back and feel this contributed to my BE...but as I said helped contribute. I have believed it is never just one thing that caused/causes a happening/event etc. in ones life.
Yes to Manuka honey or a good pure honey also.
Your body has given you much to take care of and that ain't an easy job in many ways.
Barbara

Wish we could Velcro ourselves to the right sleeping position so not to end up on one's back and below where we should be.

I, for me, I did not start PPI's and to this day do not think I would if a doctor prescribed them due to possible side effects, especially with osteoporosis and BE.
