PPI's peripheral neuropathy b12 alcohol

Posted by leebg @leebg, Apr 30 7:46pm

I have been prescribed omeprazole for the last 14 years initially for acid reflux. It was like a wonder cure because I was a heavy drunker. I was only meant to take 1 x 20mg capsule daily. However on some days or nights especially after alcohol I would take several up to 4 at a time! I've done this for years assuming they were harmless.
Around 2 years ago i started to experience some discomfort in my feet, numbness, Tingling, pain, that because constant even moving to my hands and head. I was getting frightening because my memory was becoming poor. Tinnitus, vision weakness. Etc
It turns out i was b12 deficient and experiencing neurological symptoms and my GP agreed to b12 injections. I have had loading doses and was on maintenance doses 1x 12 weeks. It's been just over 9 weeks and I wasn't feeling good so now the GP has agreed to 1 x 8 weekly for 6 months. I'm 3 weeks Sober and will stay that way. I'm just after some hope and encouragement.

Hello @leebg, Welcome to Connect. It is good to hear that you have a plan going forward and your GP is helping with the B12 deficiency treatment. Having a treatment plan and learning as much as you can about your neuropathy condition is probably the best thing you can do to help yourself. There are quite a few members who have started discussions on B12 deficiency if you would like to scan through them and learn what others have shared - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/discussions/.

Have you found any local support groups for encouragement for staying sober?

My husband has peripheral neuropathy and he also has Dementia
He is 81 and he struggles every day with physical issues along side his Dementia. Iam his care giver and I have ITP(low plattlet count) and a Meningioma. I go around feeling sorry for myself and I do not want to be like that. I try very hard to look at each day as a blessing.

Good for you. Alcohol was numbing the billions of intestine villi , stopping B12 absorbtion. Now that it's going in your nerves will gradually get their missing insulation renewed. Hurrah, someone else gone off alcohol. You have also stopped dementia coming.

@jamessaxo thanks! Some of the symptoms honestly felt like dementia i was really struggling i had no idea what was happening to me! Thank goodness i found out about the b12 deficiency and it's neurological symptoms! I'm 46 years old i was drinking as a way of self medicating more so 20 years ago when it was problematic for then undiagnosed ptsd. In recent years i had it undercontrol although I'd binge drink. Omeprazole was like a god send because i had esophagusitis. Anyway a long road ahead all i can do is wait.

Great. Best food source B12 is mussels. 8 times more than meat. U now realize that alcohol numbs intestine villi stopping B12 absorbtion. Best supplement is METHYLCOBALAMIN. Go for it.

@leebg neuropathy is nerves missing their insulation . Low B12 over the years is cause.
An electric circuit makes sparks and smoke when insulation is missing. Nerves are the same. Take B12 in the form METHYLCOBALAMIN. But, sadly , alcohol stops it's absorbtion.
