PPI's peripheral neuropathy b12 alcohol

Posted by leebg @leebg, Apr 30 7:46pm

I have been prescribed omeprazole for the last 14 years initially for acid reflux. It was like a wonder cure because I was a heavy drunker. I was only meant to take 1 x 20mg capsule daily. However on some days or nights especially after alcohol I would take several up to 4 at a time! I've done this for years assuming they were harmless.
Around 2 years ago i started to experience some discomfort in my feet, numbness, Tingling, pain, that because constant even moving to my hands and head. I was getting frightening because my memory was becoming poor. Tinnitus, vision weakness. Etc
It turns out i was b12 deficient and experiencing neurological symptoms and my GP agreed to b12 injections. I have had loading doses and was on maintenance doses 1x 12 weeks. It's been just over 9 weeks and I wasn't feeling good so now the GP has agreed to 1 x 8 weekly for 6 months. I'm 3 weeks Sober and will stay that way. I'm just after some hope and encouragement.

Great. Best food source B12 is mussels. 8 times more than meat. U now realize that alcohol numbs intestine villi stopping B12 absorbtion. Best supplement is METHYLCOBALAMIN. Go for it.

@jamessaxo i did actually find recently that mussels are the best source of b12 so il make sure I have some a couple of times a week! I'm in the UK and the b12 i get on the NHS is Hydroxocobalamin and i belive to be superior to Methylcobalamin. But I will check!

Good for u leebg for discovering B12. It does 2 things, makes blood cells and renews missing nerve insulation. Alcohol numbs intestine villi stopping B12 absorbtion. Even a little alcohol. Just keep a glass of juice or water beside you when relaxing instead of the very familiar wine or spirit.
Feet are affected first as u discovered. Go for it.

Can you advise on a good sublingual vitB12 supplement

So glad for you getting the help you need including sobriety. I've had foot pain for 5 years now. I am also sober over 30 years now. Don't worry about sober longevity, just do what you need to do to not drink today. They all add up.

@jamessaxo thanks! Some of the symptoms honestly felt like dementia i was really struggling i had no idea what was happening to me! Thank goodness i found out about the b12 deficiency and it's neurological symptoms! I'm 46 years old i was drinking as a way of self medicating more so 20 years ago when it was problematic for then undiagnosed ptsd. In recent years i had it undercontrol although I'd binge drink. Omeprazole was like a god send because i had esophagusitis. Anyway a long road ahead all i can do is wait.

@leebg I'm hoping you get the encouragement you need. It sounds as if you've done some reflective soul searching work. Good for you. Drinking and PTSD can wreak havoc with your life and the relationships around you. I hope you are able to find some good relief for the PTSD. There is a lot to be hopeful for.

Another good source of B12 is Greek yogurt.

They did a vitamin defeciency test on me and I have a very high level of B12 - I have been taking it for years. Having said that, I am starting to have "Neuropathy" in my feet. Just started about 3 months ago. Not sure B12 is the answer -
