Salty tast in my mouth from diagnosed with Sjogren's

Posted by salinanwhispers @salinanwhispers, Dec 19, 2025

I was tested positive for Sjogren in 2019. My condition is very odd, other than dry mouth, I have salty taste in my mouth all day since 2021. I went to see a ENT, they tested me for nose cancer which turned out to be negative, they did biopsy on my mouth, they can't find anything wrong. I went to Irvine Clinic Research and did another biopsy on my mouth and same result. They found nothing. I am a 60 years old & in top shape of my life (work out 4-5 times a week), no health issues & not taking another prescription drugs since I am so healthy, except the salty taste in my mouth. I have not been able to taste food like I used to. Everything I eat taste salty. I am wondering anyone from this group has the same issue like me, please share how you combat this problem.

I have not been diagnosed with Sjogrens Syndrome, but I believe I have same symptoms. At night my cheeks are stuck to my gums and it's hard to swallow. My PCP says there's nothing to do for it, just manage side effects/symptoms. I'm trying to drink more water, but doesn't seem to matter.

@connie2146 Have you been to a dentist recently? They can suggest better ways to treat dry mouth including Boitene products. My dentist told me that water doesn't work because it evaporates right after you drink it. There are rinses, sprays, gels and xylitol products that last a lot longer. My dentist was much more helpful than my primary care doctor. There are also two medications that increase saliva. Have you tried anything other than water?

@neisie13 , yes I’m in NC and most things shut down due to ice. Thankfully, I haven’t lost power so far. Hope others are as fortunate. I do have gas logs as backup heat.

I must say that the salty taste has gotten less intense lately. It’s amazing. I now go about an entire day and don’t think about it! It’s still there but not as strong.

I don’t find that my mouth is dry so doubt it’s Sjogrens. When at the dentist they must keep suctioning me. Still, maybe I need a biopsy. My ENT didn’t see the need. And, my rheumatologist after viewing labs didn’t either.

@celia16 Glad neither of us lost power but here most everything is closed because the roads are so bad. I was so pleased that I was getting some relief from the salty taste after starting the duloxetine but yesterday it came back full force for no reason. I'm hoping it was a glitch but we'll see. You might want to read up on the lip biopsy because I have read that many people have long term side effects from it. My rheumatologist didn't see the need for me to have it since it won't change how I am treated. Glad that you've had so many days where you feel better!!!

@connie2146 , I will ask about this as I am planning a lower face lift. I need due to an almost 100 weight loss.

@celia16 congratulations! It's a struggle. I'm interested.

Do you use a nasal saline spray or irrigate with saline? I have Sjogrens and use nasal saline spray throughout the day. Just playing detective.

I have one theory that I’m not certain about. It sounds wild but…..a couple of months ago I read that excess Vitamin A can have negative effects on some parts of the body and cause bitter taste. I wasn’t taking it orally but was using daily face serum with Retin A (Vitamin A). Supposedly, you can’t absorb too much in OTC products, but…….idk. I stopped the Retin A. I’m better. Perhaps it’s a coincidence. Anyone else using Retin A?

@celia16 I use it in the summer but haven't used it in months because my skin gets very dry and red from it in the winter. I've read that the taste issue can be caused by a deficiency in Vitamin B12 or Magnesium but I don't want to start taking more supplements without having proof that my levels are low. The only thing I did start recently is a Centrum multi vitamin.

@neisie13, funny you mention that. I was diagnosed with Vitamin B12 deficiency by my neurologist. (Important to get tested before starting supplements.)He suspected it had caused me various physical symptoms. Nor sure if that or post covid syndrome. No way to tell. Anyway, I initially went on injections then sublingual as I don’t absorb it well. My levels have been up for over a year. Sometimes damage is permanent. Oh, beware of muti vitamin. If it has B6…excessive B6 can cause serious damage. Neurologist cautioned me to never take extra B6. I’d check with your doctor.

I take magnesium supplements, with doctors recommendation. And, D3.

@celia16 Thanks for the information. I only take the multivitamin, fish oil for my dry eyes and a probiotic. So the only vitamins I take are in my multivitamin. I was tested for a Vitamin D deficiency and my levels were fine but I'll ask my neurologist if he would test me for vitamin B levels. I see him in March and have been waiting for that appointment for months!! I do remember now that you told me about your B12 shots!! I wish my issue was caused by a low B12 level but things are never that easy for me!!! Okay take care, we are still trying to shovel our driveway. The snow changed to freezing rain and now it is frozen solid and in the 20'a here all week. And of course the plow finally came by last night and pushed a huge pile of frozen snow right in front of everyone's driveway so we are digging that out today!!!

@neisie13 , ice on car and yard is crazy! It took an inordinate amount of time to clear ice from my car. Beyond thick. The yard is coated too. A trek to the mailbox was scary! Ice like cement. I did make it to my ophthalmologist appointment at Duke. Few patients there. Be careful. We’re expecting more stuff this weekend!

Today my salty taste was very low. Hope the progress continues.
