Oral lichen Planus: What home remedies or medications help you?

Posted by lovebug61 @lovebug61, Apr 4, 2019

Anyone in the group suffer from Oral Lichen Planus. I am at my wits end with all these erosive sores in my mouth. I've had two biopsies , one in the inside cheek and one under the side of my tongue. The spot under the tongue is extremely sore to touch and has been for over a year. It scares me because the soreness never goes away, sometimes it isn't as sore but nothing helps. Any home remedies for this dreadful condition?

@laurelsorensen YES thank you so much my PT is letting me use her red light lamp so I’m very excited and hope I get the same results .
How long did it take to go into remission. I assume you used it again after the flare? Did you use the same protocol? Did it work? Any other tips would be helpful and appreciated. This is like a spotlight on a 3 ft stand.

I had all my shots and then got Covid. I believe my OLP was brought on by this perfect storm. Ty for sharing

I haven't tried a place that offers red light therapy (I'm sure they're good), however, I've read that the best red light therapy you can get is from the early morning sunrise. 10–20 minutes of exposure during this time is best.

I assume the doctor tried the usual treatment for OLP, which is steroids. They usually work, but have to be repeated. Otherwise, I can tell you that after many years of BMS, there are no effective treatments. Good luck. J

@jshdma I have been on Plaquinil for 5 months and getting relief. It is a horrible condition. Got it right after Covid and vaccines

@rashida I just posted @johnbishop about toothpaste. We both use Arm and Hammer. It's excellent for my use, with Lichen Planus.

@artist01 Does Arm & Hammer make a toothpaste without mint? Anything minty definitely aggravates my OLP. I'm been using kids' berry flavored toothpaste. Yuck.

Hello to you all! I am Julie and brand new here. Seven months ago I was told by my hygienist and family dentist that I had Oral Lichen Planus (OLP). I've been a nurse for 43 yrs and never heard of it. I was shocked when they reviewed all the oral pictures they had taken. I got instructions to brush at least twice daily, floss or water pick, use BioGaia for Teeth and Gums (oral probiotic) and mouth rinse with CloSys, a gentle rinse. Also they have me using mouth lozenges overnight for dry mouth. Well I did all of this religiously.

Three weeks ago I go for another cleaning, feeling very proud of all I had done. Unfortunately my oral health had gotten even worse. My mouth was inflamed, I had ulcers, and my gums were blood red along the gum line. They tell me I now has periodontal disease and will need a deep cleaning and scaling.

It didn't feel right. So on my own, I mad an appt to see a Periodontal Dentist. She told me this is not periodontal disease but a bad exacerbation of my OLP and I should go see a rheumatologist who may be able to treat me with drugs for my immune system. So far, everyone has told me they don't treat OLP. She did prescribe the Clobetasol Cream and I did smear that on my gums last night. Of course one treatment didn't do anything.

I live in East Central Coastal Florida, Melbourne to be exact. I'd love to see a provider that actually has experience in OLP and wants to treat it. If anyone knows of a provider in this general area, please let me know. Thank you.

@njh516 I'm also an RN and have never heard of OLP when I was diagnosed last spring. SO frustrated trying to find practitioners who know anything about this condition. 🙁

Be careful with the magic mouth wash. If the pharmacist uses liquid Benadryl, it contains alcohol & can cause more burning. I have tried a mouse rinse containing clove oil & gotten some relief. I use lidocaine topical 2% solution & also I have one compounded with lidocaine/dexamethasone in it to apply topically. I am also on low dose prednisone 2.5 mg daily that keeps it from flaring. I had lost my high stress job during initial COVID outbreak & it has greatly improved since no more stress.

@fancyrph Doesn't the clove oil burn? I would like to try that, but it seems it would cause the same irritation as anything minty.

@hem1959 It is an ingredient in a formulation with several other essential oils. Clove oil has been used for centuries as dental anesthetic & to reduce inflammation, for gum disease & as an antibacterial. The clove oil is not applied directly. In this formulation I’m speaking of it is used in a very minute amount & mixed with other essential oils. Hope that helps. The formulation is called healthy teeth & gums & is formulated by a dentist!
