Oral lichen Planus: What home remedies or medications help you?

Posted by lovebug61 @lovebug61, Apr 4, 2019

Anyone in the group suffer from Oral Lichen Planus. I am at my wits end with all these erosive sores in my mouth. I've had two biopsies , one in the inside cheek and one under the side of my tongue. The spot under the tongue is extremely sore to touch and has been for over a year. It scares me because the soreness never goes away, sometimes it isn't as sore but nothing helps. Any home remedies for this dreadful condition?

Some of you have mentioned a product you call "magic mouthwash" as a healing substance. What is it and where can I get it?

@njh516 I'm also an RN and have never heard of OLP when I was diagnosed last spring. SO frustrated trying to find practitioners who know anything about this condition. šŸ™

@hem1959 find a oral medicine specialist. Look at closest Dental school. Some are also oral surgeons who specialize in OM. This fall with in Dermotology. Mayo OM in Derm.

@artist01 Does Arm & Hammer make a toothpaste without mint? Anything minty definitely aggravates my OLP. I'm been using kids' berry flavored toothpaste. Yuck.

@hem1959 try Cleure toothpaste. On Amazon. It has helped a lot. Then Biotene tooth paste at night

@hem1959 great to meet you my fellow nurse. I often wonder if this disease isn’t created and exacerbated by stress. I’ve had more than one persons share of stress for many, many years and recently had to detach with love from that child. That and using red light therapy in my mouth seem to have helped. I switched my Sonic electric toothbrush head to an ultra soft synthetic fiber that looks like a white marshmallow. The brushing is much more tolerable and I’m seeing improvement. The dentist also recommended a waterpick nightly. Much less bleeding and pain. I have very dry mouth so I used Oracoat XyliMelts in my mouth overnight and throughout the day. I rinse with CloSys mouthwash and it’s looking better. Please share if you’ve had success with any treatments.

I still have not found anyone locally that is an expert in this disease in central Florida. My dentist is an extreme empath, but she doesn’t have any additional advice except to see an oral surgeon if it exacerbates again. Presumably that would just be for an oral biopsy. I feel like I’ve gotten a handle on it for pretty long stretch now. Hope it continues. Hope you’ve improved as well.

@hem1959 I checked online and found that Arm & Hammer does not make any mint-free products. It was suggested that you search for ā€œnaturalā€ toothpastes instead, (likely at places such as health food stores).

I also get VERY chapped lips on bottom mainly 95% of time with OLP. I have found Dr. Dan's Cortibalm really helps. Dermatologist recommended and really helps in healing and pain outside lips.

Inside mouth OLP whole different animal - only use liquid Dexamethasone when have severe flareups, otherwise, just try keep mouth clean and avoid mint, cinnamon and very hot, spicy or acidic foods, rinses and toothpaste. Doctor can also prescribe "Magic Mouthwash" rinse that really helps calm down when have open sores inside mouth.
