Started Repatha - Side Effects
I had terrible side effects with statins (any statin, any dosage). For about 30 years my doctors have pushed statins and
I have resisted. Finally I agreed to Repatha. The first week I had zero side effects. With my second dose, 2 weeks in, i woke up and my joints and muscles hurt a LOT.
1. Does this side effect go away?
2. What do you know about the recent information that the Repatha trials underreporting deaths from cardiac events while taking Repatha.

I have read that semaglutide may help. I was very nauseated on that, but now am doing another one (I needed to lose a few pounds anyway) and I have tolerated it very well. It’s supposed to reduce a chance of cardiac and stroke events. I don’t know if it actually lowers chlorestrol or not.
I started Tirzepatide which is sold under the retail brand names Mounjaro and Zepbound. I needed to lose a few pounds, but it also has proven to help with heart disease by reducing cardiac and stroke events. I have had NO side effects. But, when I tried semaglutide which also helps with weight and heart disease, I was terribly nauseated and had to stop. My grandson anlso does tirzepatide and has no side effects. I ALWAYS have drug side effects and didn’t with tirzepatide.
I’ve been on Repatha for a month and no side effects..thank God. Taking statins made me miserable!
Good luck!!
My physician started me on statins almost 20 years ago and over time I found the weakness, back pain, and arm pain to be intolerable, so I quit about eight years ago. After a move to Florida I saw a cardiologist who put me on Repatha. It was effective in dropping my cholesterol to 168 within just a few months and the self-injection was no problem. However, about three years ago I began to develop finger joint pains which eventually required “pulley release” surgery to a finger on each hand, about a year apart. Things improved dramatically, until just two months ago when the trigger-finger reappeared simultaneously on different fingers on each hand. Voltarin and Emu creams have very little effect and I’m concerned that I may need more surgeries in the near future. I’m suspicious that long-term Repatha use may be the culprit.
He @tkoehl2769. It is good to see you join Mayo Clinic Connect! You are in a good place to share experiences about your Repatha experience.
I attribute problems that seemed to sneak up on me to Repatha. I do have other conditions making it difficult to know what causes what, though. I did notice relief after discontinuing for 3 months but picked right back up after trying again. Now I take a newer, twice a year injection called Inclisiran that has worked well. I am tagging @llynch17056 who started this discussion and @rhonda687 who has mentioned hand discomfort.
Do you plan to talk to your doctor about troubleshooting to see if Repatha is the cause of your pain?
Thank you. I decided a few months ago to not try any other chlorestrol lowering drugs. After about thirty years my body just said no more. It’s been hard to get back to where I was each time and after quitting Repatha about 6 months ago. For a while I thought the pain would be permanent, but it is slowly improving. I just can’t deep dive back into the pain. I am using tirzepatide and have zero side effects. I recently read that it can lower cholesterol LDL and reduce incidences of heart attacks. I’m hanging in to see if I get the side benefit of heart health. 🤞🏻
Has anyone had a reaction to Repatha that causes a scratchy painful throat irritation that feels like constant dry itchy sensation that makes you cough a lot. I don’t know if that could be from the medicine.
I had major sinus congestion like a bad cold as well as injection site redness and bruising. I did not continue Repatha.
I'm currently trying to modify my diet even more and taking beta sitosterol and citrus bergamot. Fingers crossed for next lipid test.
