Thank you so much for the links to research.
I have been taking Fosamax once a week for several years with no negative side affects. My periodic DEXA scans have shown that my severe osteopenia improved and is stable as of the most recent scan.

3 ReactionsI tried Fosamax and was immobilized with muscle and joint pain for a week with the first dose. I was told symptoms would lessen with time so I tried a second dose the next week with the same painful results. After that I was not willing take another dose. Some people are able to tolerate the bisphosphonates and some are not.
Six months later I had a break in my leg bone just above the knee while walking. At that time I decided I needed to take something for the osteoporosis and was started on Evenity. At the end of one year on Evenity my DEXA scores moved from osteoporosis back into osteopenia. I had minimal side effects while on Evenity.
I strongly urge everyone to research all the alternative drugs for osteoporosis so you are making an informed decision. Here is one of many good articles on different drugs used for treating osteoporosis. This one is from Harvard Medical School:

Wishing you the best.
Has anyone developed heart problems from being on Evenity?
Thanks. I have low bone density in my hips and my gyn prescribed ibandronate, another bisphosphonate, 3 years, probably because it is easy to take once a month. I did take the first dose and had nasty muscle pain for two weeks. The article you referenced indicates that it is not the medication of choice for the hips. Many opinions out there. My primary an internist, did not think a second opinion was warranted so I have resorted to Citrical and being more vigilant on my calcium intake. Also, I have switched to a different primary who might be more open minded about a second opinion.
@bruceandruth1970 - I took Evenity for one year, no heart problems. The only side effect I had from it was a sore arm/stomach for a couple of days from the shot. I had a small welt as well. That’s a small side effect I could live with.
Thank you for your reply.
I started taking Fosamax weekly about three and a half mos ago. About three weeks ago, I noticed that my food was racing through my bowels, and it has been really loose when going to the bathroom. I checked with my doctor, and he told me to discontinue for a month which I just did this week. If it is the Fosamax, I wonder how long it will take for me to be back to normal. I am getting tired of the BRAT diet.

2 Reactions@oretsine most people I know see an endocrinologist for osteoporosis. In my experience a primary care internist prescribed the incorrect drugs for my situation. Do you need a referral to see an endocrinologist? Is that why you did not get a second opinion? Hope the new doc is more helpful!

1 ReactionYes, a referral was needed and my primary said a referral would probably only yield a confirmation. I switched primary physicians and the new doctor felt that it was too soon to medicate with one area at -1.9 and the rest higher.
