I took Fosamax for about 2 years. It was, for me, an increasingly wretched experience. Indigestion was minor, but annoying. Flatulence and diarrhea were got worse with time. The “bone” it supposedly grew was not really bone at all — more of a calcium deposit masquerading as bone and doing no functional good. I had diarrhea off and on throughout, but especially on the day I took it and the day following. It (the diarrhea) got increasingly unmanageable and eventually explosive. The final straw was being (alone, fortunately) in a large lobby outside a college auditorium I was about to enter. What felt like it would be a small fart to relieve gas pressure instead filled my pantyhose with an explosive and completely uncontrollable amount of diarrhea and sent me scurrying to a restroom for a major and embarrassing cleanup effort. No more Fosamax for me, ever. And if I can dissuade you, so much the better. Nasty drug!

@irishk, how do you manage osteoporosis? Diet, exercise, medications?
I AM BEING ADVISED BY MY ENDOCRINOLOGIST TO START ON PROLIA AS I HAVE HAD FOUR STRESS FRACTURES IN THREE YRS. HOWEVER I AM SO LEERY ABOUT TAKING IT AS I KNOW THE SIDE EFFECTS CAN BE CRIPPLING….ESPECIALLY SINCE I AM SO ALLERGIC TO SO MANY DRUGS…..ONCE IT IS IN MY SYSTEM, I WORRY THAT I AM GOING TO BE SORRY I TOOK IT, IF IT IS ANOTHER DRUG THAT DOES NOT WORK WELL FOR ME…AT LEAST WITH THE PILLS I CAN DISCONTINUE THEM, BUT IF IT IS IN MY SYSTEM FOR SIX MOS..WHAT CAN I DO???? ALLEGRO
I have taken Prolia for 2 years and currently on a years vacation for Kidney issues which apparently not caused by Prolia. I had great results in that I went from Osteoporosis to Osteopenia within those two years and gained 1/2 inch in height. I had no side effects at all and will most likely go back on it. You must take calcium supplements and Vit D supplements and have blood within 2 weeks of the injection. Shot is not painful and needs to be done in a Dr. office. Good luck

Welcome @mohavegal,
Here’s some info on the possible side effects of Prolia http://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/denosumab-subcutaneous-route/side-effects/drg-20074315
Oddly enough, the first side effect on the list is back pain. My mom actually was prescribe Prolia to help with her debilitating back pain and she is now much more mobile, and often pain free. She too was nervous about the side effects, but after 2 years doesn’t seem to have any of them. @spiritbird2 started a thread about Prolia here https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/i-have-been-on-prolia-injections-for-2-years-now-my-kidneys/
Did your doctor suggest Prolia for you?
@spiritbird2
I took this drug several years ago for a long time. There was really no benefit. Dixa scans remained the same throughout.
