Yes, a referral was needed and my primary said a referral would probably only yield a confirmation. I switched primary physicians and the new doctor felt that it was too soon to medicate with one area at -1.9 and the rest higher.
@oretsina ina glad you are not medicating, since you don't have osteoporosis! I have read that docs are turning away from overmedicating osteopenia. Good luck!
I just started on Alendronate sodium. After starting it I read awful reviews from people who took it on a Google search and was hoping that a mayo clinic website might give me more information.
Fosamax was a positive medication for me. I took it steadily for two years and had a slight increase in bone mass. I read an article from a university study that said collagen type 2 would also work so I stopped taking Fosamax and used collagen and again had an increase. I'm opting for the collagen though my doctor has suggested Prolia. I'm 69 years old and pretty active. I lift weights and bike ride as often as I can. Btw I had no side effects from Fosamax.

I started taking Fosamax weekly about three and a half mos ago. About three weeks ago, I noticed that my food was racing through my bowels, and it has been really loose when going to the bathroom. I checked with my doctor, and he told me to discontinue for a month which I just did this week. If it is the Fosamax, I wonder how long it will take for me to be back to normal. I am getting tired of the BRAT diet.

I am currently debating with my cancer specialist over me starting on a med to strengthen my bones. Dexascan only showed minimal drop on left hip but he wants to put me on Prolia injections twice a year. However, (and none of you mention if you are also being treated for prostate cancer with both Eligard and Erleada) I have read that the Prolia increases the side effects (mostly fatigue) that one already has from taking these other drugs to put cancer into (hopefully) remission. I have been sent to an endocrinologist who suggesed that Fosomax might be an alternative and he said that the cancer doc is just being agressive. Your input please !!!!!

Just started evnity after being on alendronate for maximum time. Never had a problem.
