Tips on minimising withdrawal symptoms from Effexor (aka Venlafaxine)

Posted by richyrich @richyrich, Nov 2, 2016

I have been taking Effexor/Venlafaxine for years and tried to get off it a few times but each time I try to give up the chemical withdrawal symptoms are a horror story and I give up giving up. Anyone got any tips or tried and tested strategies? Thank you

You said it all so well. I thank you so much.
It's like this is my home group and that's what I need right now, my homies.
We do not have autopsy results yet but probably heroin overdose. 46 years old….
I think I've been coming here working with all of you for almost 3 1/2 years.
Laughing but not, cuz I help others heal only this time I need the words.
Being an RN, I have helped countless folks heal from loved ones deaths. But this really sucks….

I too want to offer you my sincerest condolences.
I’ve included a poem I received over 30 years ago and my father passed. It helped me and I hope it helps you.
I can’t even begin to imagine how you must be suffering. I’ve had several friends lose children and they all say there’s nothing worse.
Please feel free to call me (Do you still have my #) day or night doesn’t matter, I always enjoy talking with you.
The closest I can come to understanding how you’re feeling is the recent loss of my Mother a few months ago.
My memories are a great help to me, I hope yours will help guide you through this difficult time of sadness.
With deepest sympathy,

Wow, I cant thank you all enough. You all helped me so much.
I just learned that my son in Pakistan and his family of 14 have CV.
I'm an international mother, having traveled to 41 countries, not on my dime.
I have released the grief to stand up to help others, which I do so well.
My eyes are shining and twinkling again. I'm standing tall, I am opening my gifts from attending so many Sacred Peyote ceremonies. I have connected with the trees. Remember, I am an Elder at a native American Church.
Gifts like this are opened thru the Sacred Plant Medicine.
I am headed to bed. I am pooped but good, so good.
Smiling at you, Bright Wings.

Thanks Texasdutchess. Your words mean so much to me.
I am so pleased to report, I am back to my strong self.
So many folks reached out to me and helped me so much from around the world.
I was reminded, I am an International mother.
God sent me to 41 countries, not on my dime.
Today I am sanding tall, I connected with the trees again and my roots are sunk deep to recieve the love, strength and energy of the trees.
My body is even strong today. I now have body, mind and spirit connected again.
I humbly thank all of you.
Bright Wings, flying strong today.

bw, you are so correct about how to face Life everyday. I understand how hard it must be for you right now! Interesting how life comes in stages! In the last three months I have lost two of my "Forever" Best Friends! Then another Best Friend lost his mother!
It's hard sometimes to pick up the pieces! Now Especially!
But as my mother said when I lost my first girl Friend, I thought the Love of my life, "Buckle up kid, the sun is going to rise in the morning and Life will go on"!

I have been helping folks heal since I was 5.
That's not about me!.
Death is hard to deal with for anyone.
Yet, I have somehow been insulated from personal deaths. And have been very thankful for that.
My son had an almost life long addiction to heroin, later oxy's and again heroin.
He dropped me from his life 5 years ago.
As I went to see his photos, yes I can see why. I knew that look in his photos of needing another fix.
His choices…..
They were not about me.
I was an addiction RN for 6 years.
He just couldn't pull himself out of it.
That was not about me.
Sigh, we can want the best for folks but they have to do the work.
I thank you all so much. Bright Wings.
Off to go hug some trees on our Tribal Land.

@arachel Hi Rachel, forgive me for repeating myself, but I really would like to know what the negatives are when taking these drugs that makes everyone want to get off of them so much. Isn't that risking a return to whatever caused them to be prescribed in the first place? I am totally ignorant of these drugs but would like to understand better because I do have people close to me who are on some of them.
Thanks.

Hello JK. Well 75 mg of Effexor helped me tremendously with anxiety and depression for many years, but about 6 years ago I started to develop high blood pressure. Then, lots of stress hit and I had a coronary artery dissection causing a heart attack. I really feel the Effexor contributed to this mix of problems. Now, I'm withdrawing and my blood pressure has spiked so severely I thought I would have another dissection. Just be sure your loved ones consider many factors before taking it and before withdrawing. I felt this was the right time for me to taper off it and then Covid19 hit.

Hi @basil and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm tagging @contentandwell JK to make sure that she sees your very helpful response to her query made a while back.

Basil, did you decide to continue with 75 mg until post COVID to taper with your doctor?

@basil, I too welcome you to Connect. I do not often participate in this topic because I have no experience with Effexor. The person I mentioned is not on Effexor, he is on different anti-depressants but it seems that people want to get off any medications of this type.
Do your physicians feel that Effexor could have contributed to your heart attack? If your BP is spiking can that be helped with a BP medication?
Thank you for the cautionary advice, and thank you, @colleenyoung for tagging me.
JK
