The doctor has misdiagnosed me with psychosis, what should I do?

Posted by pritammududi @pritammududi, Oct 1, 2023

I have been taking antidepressant medications since 2 years, OCD medicines since 2 years and antipsychosis medicines and schizophrenia medicines since 6 months. The antidepressants and OCD medicines did not help me even by 1%. I have been misdiagnosed with psychosis, as I never had a single hallucination in my life, I do not imagine or hear voices, and I do not have suspiciousness towards others. But the psychiatrist is not ready to listen to me. He told that the diagnosis of psychosis is correct. But I do not have any psychosis symptoms and never had it. It is so frustrating to be misdiagnosed and been given wrong medicines for 6 months. What should I do?

I completely understand! "He told me the diagnosis of psychosis is correct" is so typical of Drs, especially psychiatrists, I have found. No further discussion, just I AM RIGHT, is essentially what they are doing/saying. Be very careful of being misdiagnosed [everyone out there]! I found out last year that I have three incorrect Dx's out there in the medical world, which are causing me to be charged the most expensive rate of Medicare Supplement Ins, and I cannot change companies because of these incorrect diagnoses! I was diagnosed with "Major Depression and Anxiety Neurological Disorder", but one of the Drs, along the way, decided to call it Bipolar, and it got into my medical record! I have never been Dx'd with Bipolar, no Dr has even ever brought up a discussion about it, and my symptoms do not indicate Bipolar. I was Dx'd with Stage III Kidney Disease by a nephrologist and saw him for a couple of years, or so. He never treated me, just kept me coming back to me. When I was hospitalized the next time, I gave this Dx as part of my medical history. The hospitalist told me that I do not have ANYTHING wrong with my Kidneys at all! I stopped going to the nephrologist immediately, but I must admit it leaves questions in the back of my mind. I contacted Medicare about Medicare Fraud, but they couldn't have been more disinterested! [Even tho it is a waste of taxpayer $] The third Dx out there for me is COPD, which my pulmonologist never, ever referred to. I have a couple other lung problems and I have an elevated hemidiaphragm, into my R lung, plus a chronic severe cough for four years that he could never figure out, which finally did resolve itself, but again, I was never spoken to about "COPD". After much research, I have come across a company who is supposed to help you with trying to get these incorrect Dx's wiped from your medical records, but there is no guarantee. I have been too sick since I found the company to adequately pursue it, but I will at least try, because it is causing me significantly financially and I can't change my insurance company! This is just a warning to those of you who know about "misdiagnoses" that have been entered into your medical record. It can cause you significant problems, besides be very frustrating!

@pritammududi I do understand what you wrote and why you think you’ve been misdiagnosed. We aren’t medical professionals here on Mayo Clinic Connect. We can offer you support and share our experiences when that is helpful.

I have not had the experience you describe with psychiatry. I have had several experiences with diagnoses that were made but I wasn’t convinced with the treatments advised by the doctors. So, I sought out another medical opinion. In my case I knew that nothing I would say would convince the doctor to take another approach.

Are you seeing a mental health therapist such as a psychologists (not a medical doctor). Psychologist are very good with diagnoses and can recommend a psychiatrist to see when it’s needed. I’m thinking you might like to get another opinion given what you wrote.

Yes go get another opinion! Soon. Have the doctor explain what he's saying if you don't understand. I always ask questions. I had a seziure type episode automatically, Epilepsy. No discussion. I went to my Psychiatrist and told him about the episodes and he r we payed " those episodes are Anxiety Back Outs. Made much better sense! I researched the diagnosis and I have been having these for years.
Even though it's a Hassel to find a Dr. Do it for yourself. Get better! You can.

Please, please get a second opinion.

Are you still taking any of the antidepressants or OCD medicines? From what I've read and seen, it can be somewhat dangerous to combine too many of these medications. I would be suspicious of a prescriber who pushed me to take anything I am not comfortable with.

I think the suggestions to do what you can to seek out a second opinion are good advice. I have read about people's experiences with some of these medications, and sometimes the side effects are identical to the symptoms they are intended to treat. What I mean is that an antidepressant for example can actually cause depression, and so on.
It is also very, very dangerous to quit a psychoactive drug suddenly. The best advice, from people who have been on these medications, is to lower the dose very slowly over a long time.

May I ask if you have any options for getting a second opinion?

This is my 5th psychiatrist. I have changed 4 psychiatrist. All psychiatrists have misdiagnosed me with a wrong mental illness and are giving me wrong medicines . I am tired of explaining to them that the diagnosis is wrong and the medicines are not helping me. I have tried to tell 100 times that the medicines have not helped me at all. But they are not ready to listen. They think that they know everything and they are overconfident and stubborn. They are forcing me to take wrong medicines. If I try to explain it to them that the diagnosis is wrong, then they behave like"Who are you to tell us, we are doctors. We know better than you"

May I ask what symptoms led you to seek help for your mental health two years ago, when this journey began?
