Tadalafil vs tamsulosin for BPH

Posted by scien123 @scien123, Apr 20 9:05am

Has anyone switched from tamsulosin to tadalafil for BPH symptoms? I was taking tamsulosin and it caused aching cyclic groin pain every 3-4 days only relieved by ejaculation/orgasm. AI diagnosed it as seminal vesicle congestion and recommended switching medication. Has anyone switched and what has been your experience?

@deanhobart... I have been on tamsulosin for a long time now...I am 82 . If I don't take it, I am in trouble and cannot urinate. The problem I now have is incontinence and a huge problem with stuffy nose that makes it really hard to sleep since I have to mouth breath... Is there any holistic way to solve this enlarged prostrate issue I am having??/ Thanks

@rbusch1944 I have been taking tamsulosin for three months, congestion in the sinus is a side effect, started taking taladafil with the tamsulosin made stuffiness worse. However it’s odd in that I get stuffiness then it will pass and come back, strange. I’m contemplating a turp to rid me of some of the issues, one will be to get of off the meds.

Hi, I have the same exact issue. I can’t take any of the alpha blockers. The stuffiness nasal congestion is off the wall. I’m 73. I already suffer from allergic rhinitis which I controlled with Flonase now and then however the Flonase slows the urine flow. It got worse over the years so now I’m seeking I believe I’m gonna go with PAE.

@grandmira Yes , the tamsulosin affects me mostly when I try to sleep. I am 82 years old and have been on tamsulosin for a long time, the stuffy nose seems to affect me more when I am lying down . When I get up there seems to be less stuffiness. I need to take it however, otherwise I am in big trouble and unable to urinate. I do fine that the earlier in the day I take it, the less problems I have with stuffiness when I try to sleep. I will be asking my provider if there is an alternative

I made the switch. Started taking Tamsulosin for BPH symptoms after a bad UTI. It made me feel tired all day long, really washed out. I need to exercise daily, so I asked to change my prescription. My urologist prescribed 5 mg tadalafil daily, explaining it has the same effect on the bladder neck. Since taking it, I'm exercising 30-45 minutes a day and feeling fine. I'm waiting for results of bladder ultrasound to see if I'm emptying thoroughly. Hope so. Tadalafil also provides a welcome erectile boost.

@rbusch1944 yes the stuffiness is worse when I lay down. Now I,m taking Tadalafil and the two together make it worst at times. That’s the odd thing about it, l’m not always so congested, but when I am it’s mostly when I’m laying down when going to bed. As you said have to take it or the plumbing will back up eventually, looking to turp, no drugs and plumbing free flowing.

@anthony11021 I know what a “ pain” that congestion can be. I have allergic rhinitis and have used Flonase as well as other nasal sprays . I had been using over the counter decongestants but since I was diagnosed with BPH they are prohibited as they cause urine retention. It is becoming apparent that a final cure for BPH would be a turp or similar procedure, then I can toss the meds, if everything goes well.

@grandmira on Thursday I have an appointment with Dr. Philip Pearlman ent specialist and this is what I’m going to tell him:
What I Need From You

1. A treatment for my nasal congestion that does not slow my urine stream or interact with aspirin/Plavix.
2. Possibilities to discuss:
· Montelukast (Singulair) – leukotriene inhibitor, not an antihistamine or steroid
· Ipratropium nasal spray – anticholinergic, but local; low systemic absorption
· Saline/xylitol rinses with squeeze bottle (already trying, limited effect)
· Nasal strips + wedge pillow (helps but not enough)
· Office-based procedure (e.g., turbinate reduction) if medically appropriate
3. Evaluation for aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) given the timing and severity of congestion after starting aspirin.

@anthony11021 Good luck I hope you find something that lessens your congestion issue. I live in an area close to the coast, that and the dampness only exasperates congestion issues. Also taking the meds I presently take Flomax and Tadalafil only add to the issue.
